The LATEX \renewcommand function counterpart in Docbook XSL

Hi All, 

Has anybody seen/created something similar to the LATEX \renewcommand function? This function redefines an element's default look&feel within the source file.

What would you expect a "\renewcommand function counterpart" to accomplish?

XML has processing instructions (PIs). DocBook XSL recognizes a set of
predefined PIs, and you can also create your own as part of your
customization. See
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/ProcessingInstructions.html.

You could also use the role attribute as a "hook" for customizations. See
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/AddNewTemplate.html#AttValueFormatting
