The Latest 'Aggregator' In The Privacy WarsComing on the heels of the public discussion on the legalities of Avvo
and other aggregators of internet content about individuals: http://www.peekyou.com/ PeekYou calls itself "the white pages of the Internet". You have a profile whether you like it or not and it is structured so that PeekYou will collect links in one convenient place about your Internet activity and what others say about you, whether you like it or not. Unlike ZoomInfo and other sites of this ilk, Peekyou does not currently allow you to remove your own profile. From the FAQ: "What are locked profiles? Locked profiles are special profiles that can be modified only by registered users. Why wait? Click the "register" link at the top of this page to become a registered user." From the registration page: "Registering a free account on PeekYou.com DOES NOT create your PeekYou profile page (the one with all your links). PeekYou can not currently verify a user’s identity, so for the time being, we are keeping the membership and profiles separate." So, we all have a Peekyou page, but even if you register, you can't currently do anything about it or lock your profile. But you can become a "member" and immediately jump in and start contributing info about others. Is this any different from the Zabasearch flap? Anyone want to predict how long they have before they will inevitably have to back down on this? It violates the EU Privacy Directive and is legally problematic in many other ways, I am sure. -- Carol Ruth Shepherd Arborlaw PLC Ann Arbor MI USA 734 668 4646 v 734 786 1241 f http://arborlaw.com "legal solutions for 21st century businesses" ********************************************************************** For Listserv Instructions, see http://www.lawlists.net/cyberia Off-Topic threads: http://www.lawlists.net/mailman/listinfo/cyberia-ot Need more help? Re: The Latest 'Aggregator' In The Privacy WarsGee, check out the number of entries for George Bush. Oddly enough,
none of them are for a George Bush living in Washington, DC because the District of Columbia is not included on its list of "states". stm -----Original Message----- From: Carol Shepherd <arborlaw@...> Coming on the heels of the public discussion on the legalities of Avvo and other aggregators of internet content about individuals: http://www.peekyou.com/ ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone.
