The Link Classic

Hello everyone!

I'm in need to some technical expertise / brainstorming, please!

Some folks in my area have a Link Classic, previously manufactured by ATI.
The Link Classic was discontinued by the company and now they will no longer
(apparently) service these devices.  I've approached several electronic stores
in my area, but no one will touch these for repair unless they were the original
seller (which they were not).  One device has a problem with the speaker, the
other device has somehow gotten the port for the charging cable pushed up
inside.  While I consider myself a bit "techy" -- not enough to feel comfortable
to open these up & take a look see... & honestly, even if I did, I'm not sure
what I'd be looking at.

Does anyone have any suggestions re: folks or groups who may be
interested / willing in helping to take a look at these?

As I mentioned, these are not made anymore & are like gold to the folks who
use them...

Thanks in advance for any advice & assistance!

Jessica,
It's hard for someone to diagnose the electronics without having a
wiring diagram. (You might see if they will give this up.) Or a
working model to check it against.

You might ask at an electronics components store to see if they have
any amateur or moonlighting techie that they can refer to you--rather
than the mainstream stores. You might also check whether an
electronics tech class (such as at a community college) might be
willing to take it on.

As for the one with the charging jack "pushed up" inside. If it is
attached to the circuit board, it might be broken. It is also
possible that it is more flexible and just got pushed passed the hole
in the case. In either event, it is more of an "obvious" problem and
most folks familiar with a soldering gun could take it on.

Another idea--there are companies that offer "component-level" repair
of notebook computers. They might be willing to take this on
(especially the power jack).

(If you really need help, I can look at the old Link I have kicking
around and can determine what might be the issue with the power jack,
and can perhaps repair that for you.)

Hi Jessica,

You want to check for your local chapter of Verizon Pioneers (
http://www.verizonpioneers.org/).  Pioneers are retired phone company
employees who volunteer their time to the community.  I used to contact the
Pioneers with help rewiring old toys.

Hope this helps!
