The best agile methods and open source booksHi,
I'm currently preparing a lecture on "agile and open source software development"; with the help of friends I created a list of "best" books on the topic. I'd like to hear your opinion. Which books do you know? Which are actually any good? Please take the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=atgF1TMLpaj2J4xfQW124Q_3d_3d Your help is much appreciated. You are not only helping me do a better lecture but you are also helping (poor) students prioritize which books to buy. If you leave your email address and name at the end of the survey, I'll let you know about the results and give credits to your participation as well. Thanks so much for your help! Re: The best agile methods and open source booksUsing on-line readings would seem more appropriate for an emerging topic.
Do you want the students to understand the state of things 6-24 months ago or to be equipped to keep up with future developments? Re: The best agile methods and open source booksI'd have to agree, rather then just books it might be more appropriate to list ways of keeping up to date, books, blogs, workshops, forums, taking part in open source projects, etc.

RE: The best agile methods and open source booksDirk,
I don't feel so negative about books for students. It depends on how much flux there is, how much agreement on a topic and so on. If I was going to teach software patterns it would be hard not to recommend the gang-of-four book. If I was going to teach xP, the work of Kent Beck would be unavoidable. There are probably seminal books for agile too, but it does seem to be rapidly evolving at the moment. Personally, I have really appreciated Alistair Cockburn's books. RE: The best agile methods and open source booksApologies, I'm not down on books, didn't mean it to sound that way if it did. I read as much as I can, but I also use the other methods I mentioned..
I can't speak for workshops, that'll depend on where you are. There are plenty of videos/podcasts available on youtube. Plenty of stuff on here: http://sourceforge.net/ I can't view the survey now? I'm sure that the majority of the authors will have blogs and their blogs will lead to other blogs. A lot of these people are looking at building things together, getting a community happening. www.skillsmatter.com is pretty good, I've been to a few recent workshops and they video each on and put them on the site. Hope this helps. --- On Mon, 21/9/09, Donaldson, John (GEO) <john.m.donaldson@...> wrote: From: Donaldson, John (GEO) <john.m.donaldson@...> Subject: RE: [TDD] The best agile methods and open source books To: "testdrivendevelopment@..." <testdrivendevelopment@...> Date: Monday, 21 September, 2009, 4:33 PM Dirk, I don't feel so negative about books for students.
