The end of motorcycle inspections...?"D.C. Ending Safety Checks On Private Cars
The District is ending its safety inspection program for most private cars Oct 1., leading some people to worry that area roads will soon be flooded with unsafe cars that could cause more accidents. Emissions inspections will still be required every two years for all cars and trucks, as required by federal regulations, but motor vehicles that are not used for commercial purposes will no longer have to prove that they are road-worthy. " http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/14/AR2009091402794.html?hpid=moreheadlines The last time I went to the inspection station, a couple of months ago, they didn't even have the motorcycles wait in line with the cars. Instead, m/cs went straight to the "office" window and a DMV employee came out to the front to check the horn, turn signals, etc. What a waste of time. Hopefully the end of car safety inspections will mean an end to m/c inspections as well. (M/cs aren't tested for emissions in DC.) _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@... http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles |

Re: The end of motorcycle inspections...?I have an inspection notice for 10/10/09 - the WaPo article says inspections
will end on 10/1, but talks about cars, no mention of motorcycles - and NOTHING about inspections ceasing on the DMV web site. I guess I just have to wait an hope they make an announcement before my inspection due date... grrrrr.... Trevor On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 8:26 AM, Aaron <amaurer@...> wrote: > "D.C. Re: The end of motorcycle inspections...?If you you need the inspection still, go to the DMV online website and
schedule your appointment online. Then go to the head of the line and they'll direct you to the office. Re: The end of motorcycle inspections...?Folks, it's only the safety portion that's ending. Cage drivers will still need to go every two years for the emissions test. (Actually all they do is pull the codes off the on-board computer.) I'll bet money DMV, MPD and Parking Enforcement haven't yet figured out that MCs won't need to be inspected at all or get stickers, so I'd follow Aaron's advice, at least until we get out of the transition period. I do know for a fact they won't renew your tags if your inspection isn't current. I let mine lapse once and had to pay a fine to get current. DMV will need to adjust their database. Don't count on it just "happening" proactively. They will wait until some motorcycle owners get snared by the "system"--then--they'll fix it. Sorry if I sound jaded, but a good bit of my professional life involves interaction with DC government. "Making it up as we go along" should be the city motto. The city rarely gets out in front of ANYTHING, even changes in the regulations that they initiate.

Re: The end of motorcycle inspections...?Ok so took the V-Strom to be inspected this morning. Other times I've had to
go round the back of the inspection station for a cursory inspection. This time I was directed to a spot in front of the office. The guy checked my mileage (he was impressed with 65K - I guess most bikes he sees are pretty low mileage). That was it - check mileage, and give me my new sticker... which is, as he called it, a non-expiring sticker. Meaning I never have to go for another inspection. Whoo hooo! Actually normally I'd say this bad. I think in principle inspections are a good thing. I know my bike is up to scratch, but I worry about some of the clueless wonders I see around with bald tires and who knows what other issues. But most of them get through inspection even when they were doing them, so not going to make much difference in reality. That means we could see more baling wire and duct tape bikes like this on the road. Scary. http://trev.phanfare.com/1290147#imageID=-8710337 http://trev.phanfare.com/1290147#imageID=-8710351 In this case though it's really brought out some creative engineering... Re: The end of motorcycle inspections...?My only negative encounter with a DC inspection was when they
"rejected" me and gave my lots of crap about the driving lights I had on my VFR. The path of least resistance was to take them off and come back the next day. I still wonder why we have to go at all now..maybe in time. On Fri, Oct 2, 2009 at 11:33 AM, Trevor Angel <trevangel@...> wrote: > Ok so took the V-Strom to be inspected this morning.
