Hi,

Maybe you all remember Bundler[1] that was pretty nifty. I just stumbled
again on PMVS2[2] they have released their software now under the GPL.

I wouldn't suggest all start to download it from the source, since it is
315MB large. Therefore for the Europeans I have mirrored it to the Dutch
OpenStreetMap mirror[3]. Also in 'source only version'.

This kind of software and academic research really opens up 3D
reconstruction from images; but usually this is PhD-ware, this means
that the crowd could really make it better or improve it in speed.

Wow! Is there a good guide to getting it up and running somewhere??

I have downloaded the package. It contains a linux binary built on a
Redhat 64 bit system, and this seems to runs OK on my Fedora 11 x86_64
linux.
The example data took 984 sec to run (not sure if it was using only
one or all 4 cores) and may have correctly built the output data but
thus far I have no way of knowing.
It appears that one needs Meshlab or similar to view the output, but
building Meshlab is not simple. Whilst there are instructions on how
to do it, it does seem quite a complex process, and has beaten me!
I will need to ponder the build instructions and have another try.

Cheers,
Terry

Oh, there are more. libmv, for instance.

And you definitely know about PixelStruct, do you? :)

It's neat, yes.  I guess I expect the "next" level.  For example, it appears that this technology could create a "stereo view" of the building.  From there a recreation of surfaces and a 3D model.  From what I've seen, it's a fancy slide show?

I do understand what's going on, and the difficulty of the tech behind it, but "visualizing" or reconstructing the building in 3D form is the goal?

Why stick to buildings when you have all sorts of 3-dimensional
objects around? :)

Yes, well, i'm a bit of a lover of architect.  On a side note i've seen several papers that are doing 3D modeling and imaging from a "reverse panorama"(?), where a camera photographs the outside of a object in a controlled environment.

Back to the idea, if not 3D photo mapping, then perhaps a large stitched photo from the idea?  Essentially this is what's happening, however one photo at a time.  Is there such a way to take all those photos and create a complete stitch photo in HDR from it?  The ability to do so opens all kinds of photos.  One could literally on a super giga scale, and with enough photos, create entire city scenes from a bunch of collected photos across the web, out of video from you tube, etc.

On this page they say "This software should be used by computer
vision/graphics engineers, and is not suitable for artists. If you are
an artist and interested in 3D reconstruction from photographs, please
visit Automatic Reconstruction Conduit or Photosynth.". What do you
think they mean by this exactly? That it's not a replacement for
programs like RealViz ImageModeler, or something else?

I think they are managing expectations. They don't want to deal with
user support requests. In short: if you can't make it work for yourself,
don't bother them...

Like i mentioned; its PhD-ware, no fancy interfaces yet ;)
