The type: "variable"

I am probably just missing it as I am skimming the user guide rather
than actually reading it, but I cannot see an explanation of the type:
"variable"  that appears at the beginning of Chapter 13 but not in
Chapter 4 of the user guide.

Can someone give me a pointer?
