Thoughts on deprecating the MetaPlugin in v3.5+

Developers,

I'm considering the deprecation of the MetaPlugin in the "maven-spike"
(tentatively the 3.5 release).

*This is not to say that inline metadata, e.g., "meta-foo=bar", would be
deprecated. Only the MetaPlugin and it's presence on the plugin chain
would be deprecated.*

There are two reasons for considering the database going forward

1. Current/Future Rich Text Editor (RTE) support is limited

Whether the existing TinyMCE or a YUI RTE replacement *inline* metadata
support always presented a problem with the reading and parsing of the
"meta-" keyed values.

My experience has been that the RTEs put the keys into HTML elements
that then get displayed in the entries to end users. It also complicated
parsing of the metadata when RTEs formatted the HTML in the editor prior
to committing it on the backend.

2. In looking over the code for the
org.blojsom.plugin.admin.EditBlogEntriesPlugin support for adding,
storing and retriving entry metadata in the database is available.

There are some hurdles to this deprecation as well:

1. Continuing support and migration of exisiting 2.3x and 3.x blojsom
installs using the MetaPlugin needs to be considered first.

2. "inline" or entry metadata would be moved to textarea below the main
blog entry field and parsed, stored and retrieved on the backend. In
this format, deletion of keys would have to be handled carefully.

3. Supporting plugins that rely on the inline metadata would have to be
refactored.

What are the developer's thoughts on this deprecation? Is there another
hurdle? Another reason? Pro or Con?

I have started looking at this deprecation very closely in the
maven-spike with some local builds, nothing committed yet.

Warmest Regards,
Tim
