Time for 1.4.0So, gentlemen, it's Monday. Are we ready to branch, tag and release, or
is there anything pending? Best, Sidu. _______________________________________________ Cruisecontrolrb-developers mailing list Cruisecontrolrb-developers@... http://rubyforge.org/mailman/listinfo/cruisecontrolrb-developers |

Re: Time for 1.4.0Just pushed all of my documentation changes. It ended up becoming a
full-on housecleaning and took considerably longer than I thought it would but things are in better shape now. It's 2 AM in California and I need to catch some sleep, but Sidu if you get a chance please do push the release out. (Check release_checklist.red if you haven't seen it yet for some helpful reminders of what needs to get done.) I've tried to update the Team page (team.red) appropriately by looking through the Git commit logs - please, everyone, take a look and revise where you deem appropriate. Abandoning Rubyforge releases in favour of Github's downloadFolks, github allows you to download a snapshot of any revision,
including tags. I've tried it with the Rails project on github, and the url *is* reusable, and supplies both .tar and .zip. Is there any reason for us to continue using Rubyforge releases? Best, Sidu. Brian Guthrie wrote: > Just pushed all of my documentation changes. Re: Abandoning Rubyforge releases in favour of Github's downloadHere are a few (none of them very strong, but): people watching RubyForge for new versions is one reason I can think of. Ability to deal with the released versions, as opposed to just random Git snapshots is another. Not having to maintain hyperlinks to a specific version (pointing to the entire download area instead) is the third. Also, the sentimental value of RubyForge :) That's about it.

1.4.0 tagged on githubI've branched and tagged 1.4.0 on github. I've also updated the main
server with the latest cc.rb (and added rspec and all its dependencies as a demo project). I've also got a tgz out on rubyforge. I've named the file cruisecontrol-1.4.0.tgz rather than cruisecontrolrb-1.4.0 - I hope that's fine since there seems to be no way to edit a release. Can please someone test all of this to make sure I haven't missed something? We can announce this once everything looks ok. Chad, I'm not sure how to do the CR/LF stuff myself - Alexey, how do we do this? Best, Sidu. Brian Guthrie wrote: > Just pushed all of my documentation changes. Re: Abandoning Rubyforge releases in favour of Github's downloadI agree that there are good technical and sentimental reasons to release through RubyForge but there's enough involved in putting the release together that I'd argue it's a secondary concern since so much of the Ruby community is based around Github now. If you run short on time then put together the announcement and release through gh and someone else (I volunteer) can update the rubyforge piece later if needed. Might also be good to send the gh guys a note letting them know that ccrb is out with official git support. Cheers, Brian

Chad, I'm not sure how to do the CR/LF stuff myself - Alexey, how do we do this? When it was on Subversion, this could be done merely by checking out to Windows PC and packaging the files. Subversion can be told to convert line feeds according to the client platform. With Git, this is out of the question, and the way to do it would be by using some sort of ux2dos linefeed converter, I guess. Platform-specific linefeeds are nice to have, as these files can be then opened with Notepad on a minimal install server. What about the windows package? Github won't do this for us, right (e.g. the zip will be non-CRLF or whatever)? If that is the case and we need to have the windows release on RubyForge, then I think we need to have the non-windows release there too... _______________________________________________ Cruisecontrolrb-developers mailing list Cruisecontrolrb-developers@... http://rubyforge.org/mailman/listinfo/cruisecontrolrb-developers |

Re: 1.4.0 tagged on github>That said, if windows users are using something like textpad, does it take care of this for them? Not sure about TextPad but most decent text editors and IDEs shouldn't have a problem it. I develop Ruby on Windows and use RubyMine where the line ending choice is configurable. >How important is this? It's definitely not free. Just out of curiousity, where is the need coming from to convert files into CRLF form in order to zip them? I've not had problems zipping said files on Windows no matter what the line ending type, including files that contained multiple forms. BTW, one can convert a text file with LF ending to CRLF form by using the following command: TYPE input_filename | MORE /E /P > output_filename >I feel pity for people trying to use this (or any other Ruby) stuff on Windows :) Well, from my perspective it would really help if folks wrote portable code. ;) No real reason not to. Using Ruby should not hinder this process. We're using JRuby on Windows. Speaking of portability, I've lost count of the number of times I've seen code that attempts to determine if you're on Unix/Linux by erroneously making the following check: "if RUBY_PLATFORM =~ /mswin/ ..." which when false leads to some Unix specific code being invoked. If you're using JRuby on Windows this check will be false and will cause grief. To be more robust the check see if the the system constant JRUBY_VERSION is defined as well. Checking the RUBY_PLATFORM constant only is insufficient to determine the current OS. I'm rambling... The file platform.rb in the Cucumber gem is an example of some friendlier constants that one can emulate. It would be nice to see something similar incorporated into cc.rb. Just my two cents. Re: 1.4.0 tagged on githubI'm with you on the portability :). I'd like to see CC.rb running on
jruby, cruby 1.9 and (if possible) Iron Ruby. The work Brian's been doing - moving to Rails 2.3 - should go a long way toward making this a reality. The good news is that I just ran a build of the CC.rb rails-2.3 branch using jruby and all the tests pass. The bad news is that the server fails to start. But it's 3am here so I'm calling it a night. Thanks! Sidu.
