To all membersA question to all members:
What kind of loss-less compression (FLAC, APE ...) do You prefer and why? |

FLAC all the way: - De facto standard for lossless compression - Widely supported - Open source - Backwards compatible (APE isn't, if I recall correctly) Other lossless compression schemes might be better (= higher compression) than FLAC but "lost the arms race" - also, with 1 TB drives costing less than $80, this is fast becoming a moot point. I have recently started the project again and decided to switch to FLAC as it seems it's becoming the default standard. Not only does EAC come with the FLAC but my audio player of choice (VLC) also supports FLAC out of the box. Additionally, several high-end receivers with Ethernet connections and can play FLAC audio files located on a PC. FLAC also supports tagging and cover art and APE does not. EAC inserts album cover art into each FLAC file so that when you create a playlist of songs from different albums the VLC player displays album each song came from. My audio player (VLC) is getting the album art from the internet each time it plays a song. It must use an album ID tag inserted in each song by EAC to get the correct album art. Sorry for the misinformation. Harry |

Re: To all membersMartin wrote in an earlier email the reasons I support FLAC.
Another is flexibility in converting to other formats. dbPowerAmp's converter allows one to move from FLAC to just about any other mainstream format. Re: To all membersKen,
I have found that other means can manage album art more easily (e.g. MediaMonkey). You have to shell out a few $$, but I've been quite pleased with the capability and flexibility of that program for managing my media archive. Re: To all membersI use both FLAC and MP3.
MP3 for portability (IPODs/ZUNEs/etc) and FLAC for in-home usage. I direct EAC output to MAREO to create both file sets. I have used MAREO for over a year now and absolutely love teh combination of EAC and MAREO. Re: To all membersI use FLAC as well. My entire library (personal CDs and live downloads) has been completely converted over to FLAC with the low pricing on 1TB hard discs. My only disappointment is that my Zune does not support it requiring an extra conversion step (Media Monkey for me).

Re: To all membersTim,
dbPowerAmp converts from FLAC to .wav (lossless) faster than MediaMonkey, if you have a multi-core processor. They have written the app in a multi-threaded fashion to take advantage of the extra cores...something not all apps do. AJ TFS wrote: > > > I use FLAC as well. Re: To all membersI've put several items into a zip file and have attached it to this email.
I cannot upload files to the group, so just in case the attachement is not available, I've CC-d those who directly asked for the info. The zip file includes two versions of MAREO in .rar archives. The Mareo.rar archive is version 5.0 The Mareo6b2.rar is version 6. I was only able to get what I wanted to work with version 6. But I cannot find it available for download anywhere any longer, so I included the archives in the zip file. Also included is a copy of my MAREOE.INI file (the real key to using MAREO), the command-line EAC text I use, and a copy of my EAC profile. The only downside to using MAREO is I cannot get MAREO or EAC to delete the .wav files after the compression cycles complete. But that has only been a minor inconvenience. I just made a .bat file to delete all .wav file from my compression library. Click on that and by the time I shut down EAC and start my tag editor, the .wav files are gone. Enjoy. In my opinion it doesn't get better than this.
