Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Upgrade script extremely inefficient (downloads from the internet, ignores local CD image)I am very disappointed with the Ubuntu upgrade process this time.
After attempting to perform a distribution upgrade, I find it would be much faster to download the CD using bittorrent. After downloading the desktop cd, I find out I need the "Alternate" CD. So I download that. I run the cdupgrade script, which gives me the option of allowing packages to also download over the network. I say yes. But it says 1+ day. (Why would I need to download so many packages on day zero)? So I cancel, re-run the script and say no. Still downloads. I untar the python, type ./karmic --cdrom=/cdrom --without-network . It still downloads from the network!!! Also, version upgrade "terminal" window doesn't open, unlike the window in regular updates. It should finish downloading the packages in either 10 hours, or 2 days, 1 hour. Yuck. --Randy _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Upgrade script extremely inefficient (downloads from the internet, ignores local CD image)I performed the upgrade to Karmic beta the other day. My network at work
really sucks (and I am doing something about it, but it takes time). The upgrade took about 12 or so hours, and yesterday I got the bits to upgrade to the production Karmic. So far, not a lot of issues, but I have not really done much. I did reinstall Vbox 3 since Karmic installed OSE. Sound works ok. Next month I'll see if I can get connected to the overhead projector in 325. I've never had trouble with the MIT projectors until last September, but that is an issue for later. Re: Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Upgrade script extremely inefficient (downloads from the internet, ignores local CD image)It only took 1 hour to download the CD via bittorrent. And I told the
update not to use the network, just the CD. So the script is ignoring it's own flags. There is no need to download the files again. RCN seems to throttle torrents and other downloads after a while. They slow down, then if you reset the cable modem it gets faster. Do you have the models of the offending MIT projectors? -r Jerry Feldman wrote: > I performed the upgrade to Karmic beta the other day. I think you're complaining about network performance, not the upgrade process (which btw is one of the most seamless out there). Especially if you're using the default mirrors, which were very busy due to the release yesterday... _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Upgrade script extremely inefficient (downloads from the internet, ignores local CD image)1. Looks like there might be a bug in Ubuntu's script. However, the
Ubuntu CDs do not contain all the bits for most installations, but it should have at least warned you. 2. Comcast has been criticized for this also. In general, what has been your experience with RCN. Currently at work our connection is throttled to 2Mbps shared (and I'm not going into what we pay monthly for rent). In any case our alternatives are to either get one or more T1s, or RCN. RCN will save us a few hundred $$ per month with a 20Mbps/2Mbps cable connection. Currently we do have RCN on our floor and in our computer room for another client, so installation is no problem. 3. I don't know the model numbers. It looks like MIT upgraded all their projectors in E-51 (or at least in the rooms we use). I'll play around with it next meeting and possibly at the installfest (the classroom next door has an overhead). I think you're complaining about network performance, not the upgrade process (which btw is one of the most seamless out there). Especially if you're using the default mirrors, which were very busy due to the release yesterday... If you have multiple local systems and a relatively slow network connection, having to download everything is very inefficient. I have two machines running OpenSUSE, and rather than use online update I download everything and use smart to install things. (I'm surely downloading far more data than I would by pointing at the remote repositories -- but the way I do it does all the downloading overnight, so it takes much less of my time.) -- Robert Krawitz <rlk@...> Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- http://ProgFree.org Project lead for Gutenprint -- http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net "Linux doesn't dictate how I work, I dictate how Linux works." --Eric Crampton _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 Upgrade script extremely inefficient (downloads from the internet, ignores local CD image)RCN has always been fantastic for me. I've got 20/2 service and always get
around 1.7MB/s when bit-torrenting distro ISOs. I've never seen any throttling. -Tim On Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 9:03 AM, Jerry Feldman <gaf@...> wrote: > 1. It may be too late for you now, but Karmic has DVD images available. Those should have less need for tapping the network to do the upgrade. --Rich P. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |
