Tournament Nov 17th... anyone? anyone?

Gang. There is a forms and point sparring tournament Nov 17th way down in Coquille about a two-hour drive. Dunno what the competition is going to be like but the point sparring rules are kind of nice because it looks like they're continuous sparring rounds instead of the kind where they stop you at every exchange to award a point to one side or the other. Continuous is much more alive. They have divisions for traditional forms and weapons (the kind we do), creative forms (think XMA, jumping around craziness.. not my bag but if any of you can do wushu twists and back flips.. be my guest), and point sparring. If you intend to compete in point sparring, you'll need to pick up mouthpiece and foam point sparring hand, head, and foot gear before the match (the stuff's not too spendy. Check with me and I can let you know the pricing I can get on it). Here's a link to the rules page on the website.

Please let me know if you are free that Saturday and would like to compete. I plan on spending extra time working on competition-specific stuff before the tournament for those who want to go. The next one is in the beginning of January. If anyone's really gung-ho to try their hand at a weapons form, I am willing to teach basic staff, basic nunchaku, or possibly basic broadsword to you in the next week or so provided you have the time to practice the hell out of it so it looks clean when you present.

In case anyone's wondering, the Sparmaster headgear, feet, and hands would run about $45 total.

I'm interested in learning some forms for the tournament.  A weapons form sounds especially enticing.  I'll check if I have that Saturday free.

Thank you for posting our tournament. If you have any more questions feel free to email or phone us.

Yes, we will have both regular point sparring and continuous sparring. And while we have creative/contemporary weapons, we hope it won't get TOO XMA-ish as that is not our thing. Primarily, we have the creative divisions so that the XMA-ers don't overshadow more traditional forms.  Last year a young man from Portland performed a  lovely creative open handed wushu form to music in the creative division and walked away with a grand for his form in his age/rank division.

And just so you know, we added an award for "best all around MA'ist" for the person who does well in a majority of divisions... a high point, if you will

Also, where are you located? I have one of my provisional black belts(a younger teen-ager) who moved to Eugene and is not getting to Coquille as often as she would like and while she has started judo, I suspect she would like a place to work out and maintain her sparring and other skills.

Thank you again

I would like to but I can't really say I am up to par with any of the quality I would consider tournament level. I am very interested in the broadsword forms but I again can't really promise a ton of free time to get it clean.. i need more free time!!

My take on it is this; if you'd like to give it a shot, go for it. The worst possible outcome is that you don't place but you get a bit of experience, see some of the other stuff out there, and come back another time a bit less green. That's not a very bad outcome at all in my book.

Yes. I strongly recommend pre-registering as it's cheaper that way (plus, it really helps the organizers). Check out the link I posted for the registration form, fee, etc etc.

And yeah, we'll be car-pooling based on the number of people going. We'll get down there and warm-up as a team, check in for our various divisions, and cheer each other on wherever possible (Jiayo!). The main things are to have a good time and learn as much as possible from the experience. Also, anyone not planning to compete is encouraged to go down anyway and watch.
