Trying to find a workaround for issue in Subversion 1.5.x and laterHello,
I have been trying to find a workaround for issue 3242 (1), which prevents users that do not have access to the repository root from creating a branch. My server is 1.5.7. I have found that if I use the 1.4.6 command line client, a user without access to the repository root can still create a branch. Given that, I was hoping that a version of SmartSVN based on Subversion 1.4.x would have this same behavior. I assumed that SmartSVN 4 was based on Subversion 1.4.x (however this was not indicated in the About dialog, and could not find it indicated elsewhere). However, with SmartSVN 4.0.11, I see the same behavior I observe with the 1.5.x command line client. Specifically, when I try to create a branch as a user without read access to the repository root, I see the following error: Server sent unexpected return value (403 Forbidden) in response to PROPFIND request for <root> Is there a version of SmartSVN based on Subversion 1.4.x that might not exhibit this behavior? Re: Trying to find a workaround for issue in Subversion 1.5.x and laterWith some more testing I've found that SmartSVN 1.3 does not exhibit this behavior, so I'm assuming that SmartSVN 1.3 is based on Subversion 1.4.x. |

For version 6.5 beta 3 we have now included an SVNKit update which addresses this problem. Can you please confirm that it resolves your problem? Hello, I have tested SmartSVN 6.5 Beta 3 under the same conditions were I have been able to reproduce the error with SmartSVN 6 and other Subversion clients. The issue persists. I can create a branch as a user that has rw access to the repository root. I cannot create a branch in a directory where the user only has rw access to a limited branch of the directory tree. I have a screen capture of the error dialog, but it doesn't appear that I can attach images to this message. - Ryan ------------------------------------ Yahoo! Sorry, I should have mentioned that. Hello, Thank you for the clarification. I can create a branch using the following sequence of operations: Repository -> Open in Repository Browser -> (right click on desired source directory) -> Copy The ability to perform a copy operation through the repository browser is a big help, and provides functionality not available in TortoiseSVN (since they have yet to implement such a fix for server side copy operations as far as I know) or a command line client. However, it seems as though it will still not be possible for a user with limited per-directory access permissions to perform a merge operation, which is a significant disadvantage for Subversion. Thank you. - Ryan ------------------------------------ Yahoo! Re: Trying to find a workaround for issue in Subversion 1.5.x and laterI was partially mistaken on this point. If I use Modify > Merge, I can successfully merge. If I use Modify > Reintegrate Merge, I see the 403 error. Does this make sense given the underlying implementation of each command? - Ryan |
