Tycho-2 Star catalog lacking Stars?

Hi,

I'm trying to identify stars on a photograph of M29 and its surrounding and
have recognized, that many stars seem to be missing. I have both the Tycho-2
and the USNO NOMAD catalogs installed and set star density to a high value,
the stars are really missing (superimposed a transparent window of KStars on
the photograph).
M29 is not recognizable in KStars when compared to any photograph and also in
the surrounding some "bright" stars are missing.

All missing stars seem to have a magnitude between 8 and 9.5 (according to
stellarium). There are some stars with this magnitudes in the area, so not all
of them are missing, but roughly estimated about a quarter of them is missing.

Are they also missing in the original catalog, or did you lose them in the
conversion process for KStars?

Hi Lukas

Thanks for this valuable information. It is very much possible that
there are bugs in both the conversion process and in the drawing code.

It would help if you could tell us which version of KStars you are
using as I fixed some of these bugs some day in the field. Many such
elusive bugs go unnoticed, and I must thank you for excavating these.

It would also help if you could send us a screenshot of the
superimposed photograph indicating the missing stars.

I think it's the drawing code. I now found the stars. They are invisible, but
I can attach a label to them and see their details.

I'm using KStars 1.5.3 from KDE 4.3.2. Is there any way to build just a new
kstars from svn (ideally using the libs I have installed from rpm) without
building a complete new KDE?

I have attached the photograph with the missing stars marked (the marked group
in the center is M29). There might be more missing stars, but I think I found
all that are clearly visible on the photograph.

Thanks a billion. This helped me greatly while fixing the bug.

Try using the packages from 4.3.2 and building KStars from trunk. I
don't think there's a "standard" shortcut to do that, but you should
be able to do this with some dirty hacks, since KStars isn't radically
affected by changes in kdelibs etc.

However, the recommended way of doing things is to build the whole of
KDE from scratch, so that it's easy to catch and resolve "upstream"
bugs in kdelibs etc.

Just try to build kdeedu againist latest kdelibs in you distro. I don't
think there would be a problem. I don't rebuild kdelibs in month.

This way you need to build only libkdeedu & kstars.

Thank you for warning. libkdeedu builds fine againist old kdelibs though.
I suppose I have to refrain from updating kdelibs until Qt4.6 arrives in the
Debian.

Beware, trunk now requires Qt 4.6, i would not be surprised if kdeedu already
requires it too.
