USB Device issue

Hi all,

My USB device, a USB key, is recognized the first time it is put into my thin-client machine. If I remove it and put it back in, it appears as USB-PEN but double clicking on it just shows an error dialog saying it cannot be mounted. Is this a DRBL issue?

Regards,

Tim.

Hi Tim,
Which version of GNU/Linux are you using for your DRBL server ?
When the problem occurs, please run the following commands on your DRBL
client:
1. dmesg | tail -n 30
2. df -ah
3. mount
then post the results.

Hi all,

Thanks for peoples help with my USB issues on DRBL. I have one more issue I
encountered today as I deployed the Server into our real environment.

There is one user account that cannot mount USB devices. No matter which
client I log into the account cannot mount them, so I'm guessing something
is wrong with the account.

I've checked that users account on the Server directly and it can mount USB
devices.

So I'm wondering where I should check to see what's stopping that particular
user from mounting USB devices?

The server is running Ubuntu 8.04.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Steven,

Here's the result from running id:

uid=1003(rob) gid=1005(rob) groups=24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),1002(group1),1003(group2),1005(rob)

As a follow-up, I am able to access cd-rom and floppy as this user.

Regards,

Tim

This is weird... this user rob is a member of group plugdev...
Did you run "make -C /var/yp" to update the YP data ?

Hi Steven,

I've never run that command so I'll give that a go. Out of curiosity the
users were already set up on the Server before I installed DRBL. When I
installed DRBL and did the drblpush doesn't that do the YP setup?

Regards,

Tim.

If so, "make -C /var/yp" won't make any difference, because drblpush
will do that for you.
No idea why...
Maybe you can start the sysklogd service of  then client, and when you
insert the USB device, check the system log files (/var/log/daemon.log,
/var/log/syslog...) to see if any clue is shown.

Hi Steven,

I logged in as this user. I started the sysklogd service and connected the usb device. Nothing is output to either the daemon.log or syslog. I guess we were expecting some hal messages to be logged there to give a hint as to why this specific user account is having problems mounting the usb device?

Regards,

Tim

Re: USB Device issue

Hi All,

I'd like to try and track down the issue causing this, I see that plugdev is
the group gives access to local devices right? Is there anywhere I should be
looking to start to figure out what is happening.

Is there a YP config somewhere that I should be looking at?

It detects the USB but the user is not able to mount it, so where does it
get those permissions from and is there any place on the file system it may
use that may have the wrong permissions in the case of this user?

Thanks in advance for any help as I know this may well not be DRBL related.

Regards,

Tim.

If  you login on that client as that user, and run command "id", if you
can see that user belongs to the group "plugdev", then it's not the YP

Hi Tim,
Maybe you have to dig more about gnome-mount, gnome-volume-manager and
GnomeVFS if you are running gnome.

Steven.

DRBL Client clock wrong

by TimShelley :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Hi,

I noticed today that two of our DRBL clients are one hour ahead of the real
time. We can change the time but on a reboot the client shows the wrong time
again.

I know this may not be a DRBL problem or is it? Why would 2 out of 10
clients have the wrong time? Where would I look to fix this, is there
something that gets prepared in the drblpush?

Regards,

Tim Shelley

Hi Tim,
It's recommended to star the NTP service if your client can access
internet. E.g.
/opt/drbl/sbin/drbl-client-service ntp on

Once it's up, it should be better there.

Steven.

Changing the keyboard layout

by TimShelley :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Hi,

Currently I believe that when the DRBL clients are created they get the US
keyboard. Is there a setting I can change to change this to another country
so that the client is created with the correct keyboard?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Tim

Tim,
Basically the keyboard layout of client should be copied from the server...
Which version of DRBL are you using ?
Could you please follow
http://drbl.sourceforge.net/one4all/#bug-report
to provide more info ?

Thanks.

Steven.

Hi Steven,

Sorry for the late reply. Its a strange one, some of the clients were fine and some needed to be changed. If we ever re-deploy the DRBL Server I'll keep an eye out for it. The users were already on the Server before DRBL was installed so those accounts that were wrong probably had the wrong keyboard set-up in their /home - that's where keyboard preference is saved right?

I'm still in the process of learning how DRBL works, so your continued feedback is greatly appreciated as is the help from the community as a whole.

Regards,

Tim.

Hi Tim,
There are keymap settings in the system dir (e.g. /etc), and in the
user's home. The priority in user's home is higher I believe.

Steven.
