What U5B WiFi adaptors will be supported in FreeBSD 8.0? How about PC-Card style, like the Link Sys Dual-Band Wireless-N Express Card? Too new? As a rule, are PC-Card adaptors more compatible with FreeBSD?

How will network selection work? In 7.1 I just edit my /etc/rc.conf and reboot, but I need a more user friendly UI.

Hey Gary!

We've tried several USB wifi adapters at work with varying success. It
helps if they're based on an Atheros chipset. I haven't run across
that particular pc-card one but we can add it to the test list.

We recently put a mini-pci 3g evdo card in one of our laptops and got
it going fairly easily. Works great!

For a decent network config GUI, checkout PC-BSD, the desktop config
of FreeBSD. It's currently on 7.x but Kris Moore is working on the 8
release right now, which won't be to far behind the FreeBSD release.

best,
-matt

Why is that?  I registered with my info...  Its just been my experience with FreeBSD that it's the elegance of how well and easy it just works from editing the files.  When something doesn't work there is no faulty GUI to have to troubleshoot just go strait to the source of the issue in the file.  Anyway, you could always use a locked down version of webmin if you want a quick fix.  And also aids you in doing things graphically if that's how you prefer.

Well then I suggest you find out how to configure your mail app to prevent
it from creating Windows-unique addess like these:

As for your advice, well, no thanks. I want the UI on the router to be
text. My point is I do not want the user to have to edit conf files in the
field. Ubuntu is nice, but this is a FreeBSD list and FreeBSD runs very
nicely with Gnome, which I am using right now to type this with Epiphany
and my ISP's clunky web mail system. I have been using FreeBSD since
version 2 and Gnome since 1.4. I am certain others here have been at it a
lot longer than me.

This is not an excuse to start a FreeBSD vs Ubuntu war.

Looking forward to hearing you contribute something about FreeBSD.

I've only tried one, but I suspect the best supported cards will be of
the 11b/g variety.  I can personally vouch for the Linksys Compact
Wireless-G (WUSB54GC) adapter to work perfectly with the rum(4) driver.

Why not use ifconfig(8) and wpa_supplicant(8)?
