Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopMatt:
In your Maven for Newbies page you say: ... At home I'm doing a different project on my Ubuntu laptop with Sun Java 1.6 and Eclipse 3.2 ... Me too, at home have Ubuntu and Eclipse 3.2 on laptop, but I'm reluctant to use it, because Eclipse is so wasteful of screen space, especially in vertical (screen res 1280x800 resolution). Perhaps GTK is to blame, but I don't know how this works, or if it is configurable. Have you had any success getting Eclipse to look like as nice as it does on Windows? regards, Alan |

Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopInteresting problem. My laptop is 1400x1050 and I haven't noticed any significant issues with Eclipse on Ubuntu as opposed to Windows [I previously had Windows and Eclipse installed on the same laptop]. Maybe you could post a link to a screen shot and we could compare?

Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopHere are the screendumps.
In Windows XP, Eclipse displays 35 lines in vertical. In Ubuntu, Eclipse shows just 23. ![]() ![]()

Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopThis looks like most of the difference is in font size. The buttons and other elements do take up more space in Gnome than in XP, but I think just changing the font for Eclipse. Or if you want to make all your apps use the smaller font size just change the settings for all apps in Gnome. I'm at work so I don't have access to my Ubuntu laptop, but I can give you instructions on how to do this later tonight if you want.

Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopI did some testing of different settings to see what works best in Ubuntu. I was surprised to find that there are very few fonts that have anywhere near the line spacing as you can see in Windows. I sized my window to match your screenshot and the closest I was able to come up with 29 lines in the Package Explorer window. I got to 29 lines by changing my Gnome "Application font" to FreeSans Medium 8pt.
System > Preferences > Font In the process I discovered that the text editors in Eclipse set their font based on Eclipse preferences, not system settings. I chose to make it "Monospace 9pt" which seems to be very close to the same size as the Windows font, but I think the Linux Monospace font is easier to read. From Eclipse go to: Window > Preferences > General > Apperance > Colors and Fonts > Basic > Text Font Hope that helps, Nathan ----- Original Message ----- From: "alanP" <ralph.ellison@...> To: users@... Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopThank you Nathan for spending time on this problem, which I understand is outside the scope of this forum. My hope was that you already had the solution.
As you point out the central text panel can be fixed satisfactorily within Eclipse itself. Following your instructions, I now get 29 lines in the Navigation Panel. An updated screen dump is here: ![]() The system application font is set to Verdana 7 (comes with msttcorefonts). Changing the system app font seems to have shrunk also the Ubuntu menu bar, which is not a big deal. The vertical spacing of the menu bar, the tabs and the elements inside the lateral panels (Navigation and Outline) is excessive to the point of impairing usability. I'll try and find a more appropriate forum to ventilate the issue, and if any progress is made, I'll post here again. thanks again, Alan

Re: Ubuntu fan despairs of ugly Eclipse on widescreen laptopActually, I never even was able to articulate the fact that I have been suffering from the same issue! Running Eclipse 3.2 on Kubuntu and I just fixed the font size both in Kubuntu and Eclipse and voila, I have tons more room to see my code. Thank you ! On 9/28/07, alanP <ralph.ellison@...> wrote:
