Unable to find makeinfo

Greetings.

I have taken upon myself the daunting task of attempting to build
Linux from Scratch (LFS 6.4) on Ubuntu 8.04 installed to hard drive
as the host system.

To be able to do this, LFS requires that makeinfo be installed. The
instructions state that texinfo must be installed just so makeinfo is
avaiable. Ubunbtu 8.04 does not have texinfo installed by default
so i downloaded and installed texinfo-4.13.

The installation seemed to go through without any problems, however
makeinfo does not seem to be anywhere in the whole file system,
except as a sub-directory underneath texinfo-4.13 directory. But this
makeinfo directory contains no executable files that i can see.
I've searched the texinfo sources and Google for anything that might
tell me why, or how to compile it.

If you can give me any information that would resolve this issue,
it would be much apreciated. If there is any other information you
need, let me know. Thank you.

Andrew.

It should be. According to [1] there should be an /usr/bin/makeinfo in
the package texinfo for Ubuntu 8.04. Something seems to have gone awry
with i(or after) the install. You might want to try to de-install and
re-install the package.

Of course there is the possibility that the package is buggy, but that
is unlikely, because those file lists are generated automatically.

[keeping the list cc'ed for the benefit of other readers -- and archive
searchers]

It might (checks) -- no, actually according to [1] they have the very
same version (even the same OS-specific variant), namely 4.11.dfsg-.1-4.
They unsurprisingly show the same file list [2].

Hm. That might work, but re-installing the texinfo package might
be both easier and less risky. Just a "sudo apt-get install --reinstall
texinfo" from a command line will do the trick). If it doesn't, we'd be
fairly sure that Ubuntu (at least the repository you are using) has a
bug.

Right. You'd just miss the docs.
