Is that so? Are you sure that's not just because he hasn't spotted the
other tags yet?

My only suggestion is then to leave the name= tag off and just use
name:lang and see if that sticks...

Have a nice day,

Who says it's just a navigational aid?  Navigation is my primary desire
for the data.  Other people may want the data for illustrating academic
articles.  In discussion with a friend, we recently had the idea of
integrating the data into a racing game so that you can race around
actual streets.  There are a panoply of potential uses for the OSM data,
not all of which are going to want just the signpost language or name.

Cool, I started thinking about a maze game with an 'import from OSM' feature of some sort.

And yeah I agree that OSM isn't just a navigational aid. I really like OSM because you can access the data and do what you like with it, and that doesn't just mean make navigational aids for different users.

Well, at least place names have signs on the nearby walls or poles as
a verifiable fact, and personally, I believe these are the ones that
should be used.  If several names are used in the area, one probably
need to list all of them.

If I got this story right, there is one set of signs in the area, and
someone in a neighboring area would like to have the signs replaced
with names used 30 years ago in the local area and is using OSM to
demonstrate this wish.

Happy hacking,
