Updated Jaunty-Lost Gnome Toolbar

Update manager popped up this morning...
And asked that I restart my machine BUT
there was NO toolbars, top or bottom.
 I tried to re-install 'apt-get install gnome panel'
 but that didn't help.
  Gratefully I have a Xubuntu live-cd on hand.
  But- how do I repair Jaunty Ubuntu?
