Updates on AIGA Design Educator Community InitiativesHello!
I am forwarding this on behalf of Brockett Horne who is on the AIGA DEC with me. Some of you who are educators might be interested in some of the Initiatives going on at AIGA, such as the Ethics discussion (a hot topic) and promotion and tenure database. Best, Dori Tunstall Associate Professor Design Anthropology Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne, Australia Updated contact info coming next week. * * * * * Welcome Design Educators! Summer 2009 News Join AIGA Design Educators Community! AIGA Design Educators community seeks to enhance the abilities of design educators and educational institutions to prepare future designers for excellence in design practice, design theory and design writing at the undergraduate and graduate levels while supporting the fundamental mission of AIGA. We'd like to bring momentum to the community of design educators. Become a member of AIGA (http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/join) and recommend us to other educators. (Be sure to look for the special rate for full-time educators!) Also, be sure to join (https://app.e2ma.net/app/view:Join/signupId:60907/acctId:9062%20%20) our new dedicated AIGA Design Educators Community mailing list and suggest your fellow educators sign up as well! Design Educators Community website evolution We're working on becoming the go-to site for design education by offering news, events, resources, discussion, and important initiatives. Bookmark the site and visit often! (http://designeducators.aiga.org/) Call for proposals: design faculty research grant Through a competitive, peer-review process, a grant of $5000 will be awarded annually to provide support for design research. This includes scholarship that generates new knowledge, integrates design knowledge into other disciplines as an influential force, or explores new pedagogies through the teaching of design and evaluation of learning outcomes. Click here for more information (http://designeducators.aiga.org/). The application deadline is July 15, 2009. Contact stacie@... with questions. Ethics guidelines need your input Do you have ideas about spec work, competitions, or meeting the demands of your institution while achieving design excellence? Contribute your input (http://designeducators.aiga.org/) on the final draft of the Standards of Teaching. The guidelines have been created by AIGA Design Educators Community (DEC) Steering Committee specifically for educators and as a complement to AIGA Standards of Professional Practice. (http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/standards-professional-practice) Design policy proposals changing the face of design Following up on Ric Grefe's lead, Dori Tunstall (organizer of US National DesignPolicy Initiative and member of the DEC Steering Committee) seeks AIGA design educators' participation in a US National Design Policy Initiative. See http://www.designpolicy.org (http://www.designpolicy.org) for more information. The Initiative is working closely with Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum education director, Caroline Payson, to enhance K-12 design education and project-based learning. Promotion and tenure information for educators The DEC Steering Committee is undertaking an initiative to provide a variety of resources helpful to design educators and institutions concerning issues of promotion and tenure. Planned for inclusion are suggested practices in promotion and tenure processes; samples of institutional promotion and tenure guidelines; samples of faculty promotion and tenure dossiers; web-articles and a discussion forum. Contact nini.1@... to share ideas. Horizon report published The New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative recently published the 2009 Horizon Report highlighting technologies destined to impact higher education in the coming five years. The report offers an interesting glimpse of the near future of education, with this year's report focusing on the role of mobile technology, cloud computing, the personal web and geo-location as key technologies. For the first time, NMC has also released a K-12 version of the report, which predicts the growing significance of collaboration and smart objects. The reports are free, and are available to read online or as PDF downloads here. (http://horizon.nmc.org/wiki/Main_Page) Community college initiative The DEC Steering Committee is interested in learning more about the needs of community college design educators and their students. Knowing that community colleges serve a diverse range of students in what is most often an open-entry institution, we are interested in connecting AIGA, CC design educators, and four-year institutions in ways that support the growth of our students and the future of the profession. Contact Mara Jevera Fulmer to share your ideas. Send email to mara.fulmer@.... * Share your student work!
