Updates to Italian language

by Andrea Volani :: Rate this Message:

Hi all,

I've cleaned out the italian language translation using the latest pot.
There was a lot of fuzzy strings, wrong and missed translation now
correctly translated.
The translation is about 92% complete, the missing part are
Administrator plugin related.

Thanks for your excellent webmail.

Thanks very much for your contribution!  The maintainers of the
Italian translation need to give their approval for any changes before
we can accept them.  I have cc'd them on this message.

Thanks again,

Yes, it is.  Thank you both.  Should I add Andrea as an official
maintainer of the Italian translation or are you (Andrea) not
interested in continuing to maintain it?

Oh my, I see you have also changed it to UTF-8.  This is lovely!
Thank you.  I will update the SquirrelMail core to match.

As such, the LOCALE settings need to change.  Can you please verify
the following (for 1.4.x)?

Part of the problem here is that all the plugin translations for
Italian are still in ISO-8859.  They need to match the main
SquirrelMail translation.  Here is the list of translated plugins:

abook_import_export.po
calendar.po
html_mail.po
newuser_wiz.po
vacation_local.po
archive_mail.po
compatibility.po
multilogin.po

Also see below:

Also, do you have an ALTNAME ("Italiano"?) you'd like to add
(especially useful for SM version 1.5.x)?  For an explanation, see:

http://www.squirrelmail.org/docs/devel/devel-3.html#languages_array

"ALTNAME

The native language name (the name of the language in that language
itself). HTML encoding must be used for any 8-bit symbols. This name
is shown when $show_alternative_names is enabled in config/config.php
(or use the configuration utiltiy and choose "10. Language settings"
--> "3. Show alternative language names") (for SquirrelMail 1.5.0 and
up)."

Hi all,

Paul, I have converted the plugin transations to utf-8, please take a
look if they are correct now.
I have also completed at 100% the translation of the main language file.

I hope the work can be included in the next version ;)

Thanks

Andrea

For the list's benefit, Andrea has since sent an offlist tarball of
all these files changed to UTF (Andrea, I don't need the .mo files,
thanks) and completed 100% of the main SquirrelMail translations.
Nice work!  However, can you please re-check the encoding of the files
for compatibility, html_mail, multilogin and newuser_wiz?  They look
to be US-ASCII, not UTF-8.

Can someone also please verify the following questions?

For the questions below:

- I'm not an expert but the locale looks ok
- "Italiano" is correct as alt name

Indeed they are!  Thank you so much!  But one more thing - oops!  I
was about to commit these and I noticed (my mistake) that there are a
series of translations in a "plugins" subdirectory too.

abook_group.po
address_add.po
amavisnewsql.po
avelsieve.po
bayesspam.po
change_ldappass.po
gpg.po
quota_usage.po
twc_weather.po
view_as_html.po

Do you mind changing those, too?

Thanks VERY MUCH.

In addition, I am seeing an unusual character at the beginning of all
files, which corrupts them.

In vi, it shows as <feff>.  Looking at the file in a hex editor, the
first few characters look like any other file, (ff fe 00 20 00 23,
etc).  I don't have time to dig more, but it's probably an issue in
your environment and the application you use to save or zip up (maybe
try tar instead) the files.  Please see if you can have a look.  The
translations are unfortunately not usable as is.

Thanks,

  Paul

Umm... strange thing... I did the work in windows with
poedit, converted to utf-8 with notepad++ and zipped with
winrar (Maybe are no the better tools for the work...).

Maybe is a charset problem, I can choose utf8 or utf8
without bom, which is correct? Actually I choose uft8.

I just tried to open the files on linux, either with vim and
kwrite... i don't see strange chars on start of files...

I reattach the files within a tar, I hope this solves the
problem.

Are you just converting the existing Italian translations to UTF-8 or are
you also reviewing the actual translations, i.e. "msgstr"? If the former I
can do that with a script and commit it (won't take long). You only have
to do manual labour it you're actually re-checking the translations.

Sincerely,
Fredrik

I've converted the entire Italian translation to UTF-8 in the repository.
All that's needed now is to update HEAD for Italian with any translations
which are re-translated, i.e. where the strings in Italian have been
modified. If the strings in Italian aren't modified, don't bother to
convert it to UTF-8 - that's already done.

Paul, when committing Italian to the repository, you only have to do it to
HEAD ("trunk/locales/"). When HEAD is as wanted, I'll branch it back to
1.4.18. If the translation "squirrelmail.po" sent by Andrea is for 1.4.18,
merge it with HEAD and commit it to HEAD.

Sorry if I messed things up for you.

Sincerely,
Fredrik

Without waiting for an answer to your last email?  Come on...

The only place I was planning to.

Note that there may be another two languages getting checked in very
very soon (see list archives), which would be nice if we could place
into the 1.4.18 locales release.

<gripe>I appreciate it, but I think this was out of line.  I had some
files ready to commit and work in progress.  You could either have
participated earlier in this thread or waited for a response to your
last email before jumping in on this.</gripe>

I'll go and blow away what I was working on and hope that it all
amounts to the same changes anyway.

Andrea, please take note - I think you'll only want to make sure you
send the correctly encoded squirrelmail.po which I think is the only
thing you've been changing the strings for.

Sorry guys, I don't understand the problem now...
What I have to do??
The last tar I send is ok??

The files looks fine for me, the plugins translations was just converted
to utf-8 and checked for errors, but the squirrelmail.po has
a lot of work in it, it was completed and polished! Shoud I re-do all
the work???

Let me now what I have to do.

Andrea

Note: I sent a mail with the tar to mailing list, but I received a mail
that's it needs approval

If the plugins files are already to utf-8, they are ok as is, since I
have not edited the translations.
Just take my squirrelmail.po and update it in the trunk.

You're right. My bad. Converting it all to UTF-8 is just a 10 minute job,
so I'd hate to see manual labour going into this. Still, I should have
waited with the commit.

Fine by me.

Yes, I could. My bad again. Sorry.

Yes, only files where the strings in Italian have been updated are needed.

Sincerely,
Fredrik
