Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 - now my NB Editor font is different?!

I can't quite put my finger on it, but somehow my Editor font, which has
always been set to Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 14, looks different after I
upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10 this weekend.  How could that
be?  I checked Ubuntu's System->Preferences->Fonts and the upgrade had
reverted my "Subpixel smoothing (LCD)"  to "Monochrome".  But resetting
it back didn't do anything to my NB editor font - even though it remains
at "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 14", it looks different, less smooth.

Any suggestions on what knob to adjust in Ubuntu?

Thanks a bunch,
tom

p.s. I'm running NB 6.8b1 on the latest JDK - 1.6_16.
