Global URL Rewrite

Hello there! Is it possible to configure a global rewrite for my
tomcat server? Putting the filter declaration on CATALINA_BASE/conf/
web.xml, the lib on CATALINA_HOME/shared/lib and urlrewrite.xml on
CATALINA_BASE/conf is not working.

What I need is to have a url that points to a context be redirected to
a different context. Is it possible?

URL rewrite of images/hrefs - Not working on the context?

Hello all,

I am using tuckey 2.6 -

I have the following images and hrefs included in my file:

So the page url is: http://localhost:7001/project/mc/aboutus/default.jsf

With the context root being: project

These are some images and hrefs included:

<img src="/cpo/mr/assets/images/banners/en/literacy2_C_en.jpg" ... />

<a href="/cpo/mc/aboutus/community/olympics/index.jsf" ... />

I want to flip the context in these urls to redirect to the page's
context root: project

So I've tried various configurations but cannot acheive success here
is some of what I have used:

<rule>
<from>/cpo/(.*)</from>
<to type="redirect">%{context-path}/$1</to>
</rule>

or

<rule>
<from>^/cpo/(.*)</from>
<to type="redirect">%{context-path}/$1</to>
</rule>

or

<rule>
<from>/cpo/mr/(.*)</from>
<to type="redirect">%{context-path}/mr/$1</to>
</rule>
<rule>
<from>/cpo/mc/(.*)</from>
<to type="redirect">%{context-path}/mc/$1</to>
</rule>

Does anyone know how I can acheive this?

paths, if so, it's excluded (so it's a negative condition).
Otherwise resume with the rewrite. Actually my wildcard would be "/
path**" but a negative one (because it's exclusion, not inclusion).

Why not use the "request-uri" based conditions. For exclusions you can use operator="notequal". Moreover, multiple conditions can be OR'ed or AND'ed with each other. Default is "AND", you can set next="or" for each <condition> in your case.

Added an issue 57, I couldn't see a way for me to classify it as an
enhancement, I assume that is something only project admins can do.

Thanks for the patch David. The case in point seems to be valid. I have
reviewed the
patch, fixed some typos and code style. I have attached the reviewed

Firstly thanks for developing such a useful filter, it has saved us a
lot of hassle. Second, I have included a patch with tests and
documentation that adds the following condition checks:

-requested-session-id-from-cookie
-requested-session-id-from-url
-requested-session-id-valid

They check the corresponding methods on the request object. Our use
case is that Google has indexed URLs on our website containing
jsessionid, we would like to get rid of them immediately, thus we need
their indexer to try and crawl them, and be permanently redirected to
the corresponding URL without jsessionid in it. The problem is that
Tomcat 5.5 hides the jsessionid from the getRequestURI and
getRequestURL methods on the request object, thus we cannot detect its
presence via a simple regex. Thus the only way to detect jsessionid
in the URL is to check if isRequestedSessionIdFromCookie is true, then
do a permanent redirect to the presented URL, which will automatically
clear jsessionid because Tomcat hid it from us. An example is
provided in the documentation.

Nope. The URF "forwards" a request once a URL for a matching rule is "re-written". This essentially means that the request is dispatched to a new location. Web application filters, typically, are configured to be listening only on request's and NOT forwards.

I'm trying to use cometd servlet, that requires ContinuationFilter under Tomcat 6.0.20. With urlrewrite filter enabled, it sometimes give errors. Disabling urlrewrite filter (or using it for different url-pattern) solves the problem.

In light of what I said above, if you add the underneath to your ContinuationFilter's filter-mapping in web.xml, it would be called even when the request is forwarded via a dispatcher.
<dispatcher>REQUEST</dispatcher>
<dispatcher>FORWARD</dispatcher>

Let me know, if this resolves the issue.

URLRewrite and OpenCMS

We need to use short URLs for the cover of books indicating the
location of accompanying material (files, data sheets ...)

We have OpenCMS as Content Manager. When we use URLRewrite, CMS
disables editing advanced properties of the contents.

I look for that issue in the group but I have not found anything.

Is there someone who has had this problem? How did you solved?

I'm assuming that in your code, you want to find out what the original
URL was that your client used when hitting the filter. There is,
perhaps, a bog standard way of doing this that I'm not seeing. One
approach that comes to mind, though, is to set it as an attribute of
the URL.

So you have a rule, way on top of your urlrewrite.xml where you call:
<rule>
<from>.*</from>
<set name="local.test.originalurl">%{request-url}</set>
</rule>

Then in your code, if you can get a request object:
String originalUrl = (String)request.getAttribute("local.test.originalurl");

Something like that, anyway. This would require some tweaking. I'm not
even sure if the rule is legal as is.

perhaps with NIO.

I'm trying to use cometd servlet, that requires ContinuationFilter
under Tomcat 6.0.20. With urlrewrite filter enabled, it sometimes give
errors. Disabling urlrewrite filter (or using it for different url-
pattern) solves the problem.

I also had other filter, Spring Security, but it doesn't seem to

Yes, you are right. This is the only way for patches to make their way into the code base.

On a sidenote, are any of these patches going to make it into a
release at some point? I think Avlesh is currently the only active
developer of the project?

Yes, all patches which are accepted, reviewed and applied will make their way into the next release. The next release is not planned. As soon as some major bug fixes or enhancements happen, next release would be scheduled.

Hi,

I am using urlrewrite in struts 2 app, some rules are working and some
are not

now I am facing a new problem

I have the following rule which works for one parameter, but it's not
working when I change the rule to get 2 parameters

</outbound-rule>

above rule works which getting one parameter but below rule is not
working for two paramenters

Firstly thanks for developing such a useful filter, it has saved us a
lot of hassle. Second, I have included a patch with tests and
documentation that adds the following condition checks:

-requested-session-id-from-cookie
-requested-session-id-from-url
-requested-session-id-valid

They check the corresponding methods on the request object. Our use

Hi All,

did anyone figure out why it's not working with struts?

I have a application created with struts 2 using tiles.

<rule>
<from>^/test1\.html$</from>
<to type="redirect">/test2.html</to>
</rule>

the abouve rule works from the ROOT dir of the app
<a href="<s:url action="test1.html" />" > test</a>

but it tails with .action

I have a rule which redirect the http://www.../page/23432 link to
http://www.../page_view.action?id=23432

but I don't want the redirect, if I remove the redirect in <to> then I
am getting "HTTP Status 404 -"

here is the rule:

<from>/page/([0-9]+)$</from>
<to type="redirect">%{context-path}/page_view.action?id=$1</to>
</rule>

did anyone got this urlrewrite workign with struts???

IllegalStateException help

I am using UrlRewite 3.2.0 to invoke a servlet which forwards to a
page based on the url. My code works okay and I get the desired
result, but an IllegalStateException gets logged to Tomcat.

I have tried catching the exception in the servlet and in the jsp page
but the exception is comes after the jsp and servlet are processed.

Is there anyway to catch this exception in UrlRewrite or stop tomcat
logging these exceptions because my logs are now full of them.

I'm having a hard time creating exclude conditions for a rule. Please add getServletPath() as one of the condition types.

Servlet path can be added but I am not too sure how much of help it would be for struts-like MVC implementations which are based on front controller design pattern; getServletPath in such cases would always return a single value.
If you have a specific scenario, you might want to post the problem here. Maybe there is an alternative solution.

Also, is it possible to check for existence of file in the requested URI ? i.e. like mod_rewrite's -f , -e, -d, etc ?

There's already a ticket to support -f, -d flags in mod_rewrite. The issue is here - http://code.google.com/p/urlrewritefilter/issues/detail?id=49. Interested in writing a patch?

Urlrewrite and Railo

Hi all,

I suspect this is a very silly question, but I'm having trouble
setting up urlrewritefilter in a Railo/Tomcat/Apache environment.

/var/www/mydomain.com/WEB-INF contains flex and railo subdirectories,
but no web.inf. According to the urlrewritefilter docs, I should be
putting urlrewrite.xml and urlrewritefilter's lib/ in WEB-INF, then
modifying web.xml.

I've tried various setups, including adding the filter to railo/railo-
web.xml.cfm (instead of web.xml). Either the filter isn't picked up,
or Tomcat bombs with:

After spending a whole day working on this, I now have what I want.

I am using urlrewrite to call a servlet on the rule "/(\w+)$" which
checks if the url is a membername and if it is it forwards to the
member.jsp?id= leaving the orginal membername url displayed.

I tried to use a filter but tomcat url-pattern is limited and the
filter was getting invoked on everything so it was not very efficient.
The servlet is only called on /something

It was pretty simple in the end but just took lots of trial and error
to get it to work.

It's usually better not to throw everything in a flat namespace. Why
not go for a full REST resource/identifier style? IOW, your member
URLs would be:
/member(s)/3888

You can support /members/3888/someuser if you want to. Or just
/members/someuser if "someuser" is guaranteed to be unique.

It all maps easily to an internal URL because you can just grab the ID
and you know what you are supposed to be displaying. If you really
want to be able to display on username I'd propose putting it in a
separate namespace as well. It could be as simple as /members/username
and just dealing with user name -> ID resolving in your web framework.
Because it says /members/ there you know where it is going and you
don't have to deal with things not getting hit by your code.

One of the problems here is that determining whether a JSP exists or
not is at the very end of the chain. So you'd have to wait for the
default servlet to fire and then check whether it's returning a 404.
Possibly you could do all you want to in a filter, but I'm not sure if
there is really a way to return back down the stack with a request
once it's failed. Frankly, I don't think what you're trying to do maps
very well unto the web app model, though there is most likely a way to
make it work (I am not an expert by any measure :) ).

In any case, uwf is a very thin and comparatively dumb layer on top of
all this. It is generally the first thing that gets hit when a request
comes in. At this point, you have no idea whether you will be able to
serve this request or not. But you can redirect stuff. Typically, what
this would look like were I to implement it, would be something like
this rule:
<rule>
<from>^/members/(\w+)$</from>
<to>/members.jsp?id=$1</to> 
</rule>

And then make sure the rest is intercepting requests that come in on
FORWARD, if you have any filters that need to process it.

I hope this makes the general patterns in which this is often handled
a bit more clear.

Vanity URL help

I am trying to use UrlRewite to create vanity URL's - e.g., someone
types http://example.com/membername and the members profile is
displayed with the above url rather than http://example.com/member.jsp?id=3888

I can hard code this in the xml file but with 1000's of members I need
something that does this automatically.

Currently http://example.com/membername genrates a 404 and in the
404.jsp I check if it is a valid membername and then redirect to
member.jsp?id=3888 so the profile is displayed, but I want the
membername displayed in the url.

How do I go about this?

Do I need to call a servlet? Obviously I don't want to be checking for
membernames on valid url's. So it needs to be something like this: if
url is not a valid jsp or directory, check if it is a membername and
then redirect but leave the membername as the url, if not a membername
show 404 page.

Anyhelp with exmaples would be much appreciate.

I just had to add a slash at the beginning so it looks like:

<from>^/(.+).htm$</from>

And then it worked so it was very close. I don't why this fixed it -
just similar to what was there before - as I don't really know what
I'm doing with this stuff, anyway all good now.
