Hi !

I have managed to get ThinStation run on my ITX, Hardware is okay, and well functional.

But I won’t get the thinstation.conf.user running

I am starting from an USB-Stick with syslinux.

I have set NET_FILE_ENABLED=Off in thinstation.conf.buildtime

And thinstation.conf.user is stored on stick within thinstation.profile-folder

I would only autostart an rdesktop-session !

Mfg

Martin Greiner

I have had similar trouble with 2.2.2. I ended up with modifying one
or two scripts. If you build locally (on your own Linux box) I can
mail the modifications to you.

I'm facing this problem also and found that it needs ~5 secs to mount the usb key.
I saw you've got the problem of can't write the applications config files (e.g. /root/.rdesktop/...) before (i.e. http://old.nabble.com/Debuging-profile_setup-to24320202.html#a24300352), do your scripts successful to do this now?

Thanks for your reply =]

Yes, in my (limited) testing it works flawlessly now.

Can you send me your modifications so that I can try it out?

Well, you better back-up original files... First edit

packages/base/etc/thinstation.env:

#export TS_USER=/etc/thinstation.user
export TS_USER=$STORAGE_PATH/thinstation.$PREFIX/thinstation.conf.user

Next apply the attached profile_setup in packages/base/etc/init.d

Comment: this part could be made more elegantly

              cd /root
              tar cpf - . | (cd /root_tmp && tar xpf -)
              cd /
              rm -rf /root

but I show what I did.

No guarantees, but it works here.

Good luck

Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.
I've just tried your modifications but got some problems about the configuration file reading.
Can you help me to figure out the problem?

I have put the thinstation.conf.user to the folder named thinstation.profile inside the usb key.

Attached with my /var/log/boot.log

Please advice.

I've just tried your modifications but got some problems about the configuration file reading.

I have put the thinstation.conf.user to the folder named thinstation.profile inside the usb key.

Attached with my /var/log/boot.log

Please advice.

It goes wrong here:

DEBUG - ln -s: /mnt/usbdevice/sda1/thinstation.profile
Looking for /mnt/usbdevice/sda1/thinstation.profile/thinstation.conf.user
/mnt/usbdevice/sda1/thinstation.profile/thinstation.conf.user >>
/thinstation./thinstation.conf.user

You have tampered with build.conf, I think - the
/thinstation./thinstation.conf.user isn't default. Does build.conf
look like this:

param basename       thinstation     # Used for all config/tftp/scp
file names
param basepath       .

?

Yes, I left this two parameters as default (w/o any modification):

param basename thinstation
param basepath .

On the other hand, I found that my machine success to read the usb key's configuration file on the second pass only.
To make it successful to read on the first pass, I have to increase the sleep time to 5 seconds inside profile_setup script.
I would like to ask is it important for reading the usb key's configuration file on the first pass?

Thanks for your quick response ;-)

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Linux environment.

What should I do on next step? Change the 'param basepath' value to .profile?

Thanks in advice.

To make it easier to figure out the problem, as attached with my 'thinstation.conf.buildtime' for reference.

Thinstation (especially the profile stuff) is NOT standard linux.
>
> What should I do on next step? Change the 'param basepath' value to .profile?

Absolutely NOT. You have the correct settings.

You said it read the config on the second pass, so what is the problem
then? The reason it does 2 passes is to see if you have included any
additional network (or other) parameters in your local config. If you
aren't adding in any other items, then it should be OK.

What you should probably do is look at the Thinstation environment after
it has loaded and see what is NOT being set up the way you want. E.g.
look at /etc/thinstation.default /etc/thinstation.user and in the
logs /var/log/boot.log to see if there are any messages.

Go to a console (xterm or rxvt if running icewm/blackbox or ctrl+f2 from
replimenu and log is as root / pleasechangeme).
more /var/log/boot.log
<space> gives you the next page

OK, I spotted the change in the thread now.....

Different issues should have different threads!

udev takes some time to register devices and run the appropriate
scripts. My guess is that this device takes too long and the initial
profile_setup has already occurred before the usb stick is mounted.

My suggestion is to increase the sleep 1 to something like sleep 5
immediately after the udevstart in the
packages/base/etc/thinstation.init script to allow udev some more time
to do it's trick.

In this case it does matter that it is not read the first time as
the /root directory has been created on the first pass and therefore
can't be used on the second pass (when it finds the usb stick).

I'm confused now: Did you increase the sleep time to 5 sec or not? As
I read the above sentence, you did and it works. Or not?

The 'boot.log' that I sent to you before is tested with 5 sec sleep time.
It discovered the configuration file on usb but seems failed to read the content inside.
It can't start the rdesktop session as it goes to the blue screen with Shutdown / Restart option only.

I am facing the problem about failed to read the configuration file on the usb key.
And it is because two passes of profile_setup happen before it success to mount the usb key.

Then, I tried Mike's modifications and found that although it finds the configuration file on the usb key, but it seems failed to read the content inside.
(i.e. It can't start the rdesktop session as it goes to the blue screen with Shutdown / Restart option only.)
So, I posted the boot.log where I copied from /var/log for Mike to help me to figure out the problem.

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say =]

Now I do :-)

The problem is that whilst you have set your STORAGE_PATH to the usb
stick (and your $HOME directory is now stored there), you have not told
it to look on the usb stick for your config.... i.e. STORAGE_CONFIG1

The script ONLY looks for configs in STORAGE_CONFIG1-8, not in
STORAGE_PATH.

Add a line
STORAGE_CONFIG1=/mnt/usbdevice/sda1
and see what that does for you

Good Luck
