Hi Richard,
Which Australian state? if it's the ACT then it is mostly complete in the
Openstreetmap data and that can be used directly in gpsdrive.
Otherwise what are the maps you are downloading, I've got a HOWTO for
gmaps but it's not online at the moment but can email it to you directly.
