Using Pidgin for home network.

Hello,

I was wondering if I could use Pidgin to IM between computers on my home/private network? We have 5 pc's scattered around the house and I've been looking for a tool to be able to send quick messages to one another and to be able to chat while in different parts of the house.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

You would have to have a service that works locally.  IIRC you can
perform this by setting up an XMPP server, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Another member of this list might have a better idea.

Adding a Bonjour account should work well for this purpose as long as
all the computers share a local network.  The computers automatically
discover one another and will show up in each other's buddy list.

You'll need to install Bonjour for Windows, but the accounts are just
set up locally via Pidgin.  There's no need to register the accounts
anywhere because Bonjour is decentralized.  The only thing you should be
sure about is that each system has a unique username/hostname pair.

I did this on two computers on my network, and can see the both users that I setup, but when I try to send a IM, it says "Unable to send the message. The conversation couldn't be started."

I'm not personally sure what might be wrong.  If you can open your debug
log (Help > Debug Window) when you try to send a message, and paste in
the debug messages related to Bonjour that may help us figure out the
problem.

When replying, please send the email back to support@... so that
other people can also provide you with help in case I do not know the
answer.
