Using SuperCollider with Spatial Data

I'm a PhD student at UEA (Norwich, UK) looking at different ways of
representing spatial data including using sound. The idea is that you
have an on-screen map and as you move the mouse around the map, you get
different sounds depending on where the mouse cursor is.

Potentially, you could use any data for this, but a good example of this
is if you visually show aerial photos of a place, the sound could
represent height. You could use any number of different sounds for this,
and alter the volume, tempo, tone or anything else to represent this
varying data.

I'm interested in whether anyone has used SuperCollider for anything
like this, particularly using it with any GIS software (such as ArcGIS
or MapInfo). An example of a basic implementation of this can be found
at http://www.nickbearman.me.uk/academic/bearman&tate2007.pdf although I
am hoping to improve on this by integrating the interface in ArcGIS (or
another piece of GIS software).

Please let me know what you think, or if I've completely confused you
and I'll try and explain more clearly!

Best wishes,
Nick.

David Jensenius has done several projects with spatial data.
