Using the 6-Pack system

Hi all

I need a little help getting my memory back into gear - it's over 30 years since I was a VM Sysprog - some of the grey cells are still functioning but I seem to have lost a few...

I want to get 3278 devices into the VM 6pack - so I racked my brain and as I re-call the IOGEN process is something like  >>>>

Edit DMKRIO ASSEMBLE to make changes   3277 to 3278 (not sure if I need a model suffix here like 3278-4 or something)
then VMFASM DMKRIO ????    <<   note missing grey cells
then VMFLOAD CPLOAD DMKR60
then I think I IPL the reader - getting very vague now.   And another step or two   ?????

So I logged on as MAINT and now I am not sure what the file structure I see is.   It used to be >>>>(unreliable memory again)

191 was the A disk for work files
194 was the system maintenance files accessed as D
190 is CMS S disk and 19E was Y/S (S extension)

on the 6Pack MAINT I see a B , E , F and U disk - now I'm confused.

Is there a tutorial or something documented somewhere ??

All help and assistance appreciated.

I haven't looked at the 6-pack in details and I am just off to work so the
following may be incomplete and/or inaccurate, so bake sure you backup up
what you have...

There are specific control files for the 6-pack to avoid mangling IBM's so
try:-

VMFASM DMKRIO DMKHRC

Ignore MNOTES about unsupported devices 3375 and 3390
You may also have to copy the TEXT deck to the "B" disk...

PURGE R
SPOOL PUN *
SPOOL PRT *
SPOOL RDR CLASS *
VMFLOAD CPLOAD DMKHRC
IPL C

..... system saved.....

Ipl CMS and you should get a loadmap on the reader. Check this to make sure
you have your DMKRIO. then shutdown and re-ipl.

Well 5-pack always followed "mother" (see below), the first rule of which is
never alter anything IBM sends to you, always copy and change. So the "B"
disk (094) contains all the CP mods. Releasing this will allow you to
generate a "Vanilla" VM/370R6 system.

You should then have a "194 as D/D" which is the CP TEXT decks (OBJECT
Code), a 294 E/E which is the IBM supplied service, and a 394 F/F which has
the base source. For some reason the help is on the "U" disk whereas I would
expect it to be "Z" but hey if it works.

MEMOS on the "B" disk. You can get IBM's sysgen guide from www.bitsavers.org
and there is a copy of "mother" in the "Documentation" folder in the files
section as "tutorial" which again is not 4/5/6 pack specific. Also note that
when you logon to MAINT you have the disks necessary to work on "CP".
Runnning "CMSACC" sets things up for working on CMS....

Just remember that I am in the UK so the times are a bit out of step...
