Vasulka's Manipulated Image footage and picsHi Roderick and Ethan, Roderick, do you have any pics of the April 24th presentation of the Vasulkas for Manipulated Image? I just realized that in one of the pics from past events you have a very nice camera in your hands! http://alyssestepanian.com/mi_events.html If you took pictures, could I get copies? Ethan, for the two hours of that program I sat in one spot, holding the little HD camera that belongs to the Complex, to document the event (other hand holding a light, so the image wouldn't be all black). As a result I was unable to document with photos, which I always do. I still haven't been able to find out what happened to that footage. This is one of the most important historical presentations for the arts at the Complex, and since you're in charge of Documentation and PR, would you please try to find out what happened to the footage? If it's edited, I'd like a copy for MI's archives. I'm sending this to the Discuss List, in case someone else has knowledge of existing pics of the event, or whereabouts of the footage. thanks and best, alysse _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.sfcomplex.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss http://www.nabble.com/sfComplex-Discuss-f33403.html |

Re: Vasulka's Manipulated Image footage and picsAlysse - I don't want to speak for Ethan, but just FYI our priorities are in sync with your request. The first project for PRDe is to locate and acquire all of the documentation we have and create a catalog system to track it. Ethan or Roderick may have specific knowledge of where the media you want is, but just in general know that our plan is to find out where pretty much everything is and the state it's in before too long so everyone with a request like yours will have a place to go.

Re: Vasulka's Manipulated Image footage and picsI also need to round up the footage shot from re:Make It! I know there is quite a bit of footage on the HD camera there, and I know Don had the system down to import and convert to a useable format (DV) also there is a tape of the footage Charles Baldwin shot that needs to be captured that Simon has. Theoretically, this should all be stored on a drive at the Complex.

Re: Vasulka's Manipulated Image footage and picsHello Everyone - We are in the process of doing exactly what you are asking. This will take some time to get all of this together. Please be patient.
Alysse - all of the footage from Manipulated Images are with Woody. You can check with him about getting tapes. I have web compressed footage only. We will also be archiving the Manipulated Image footage in due time. If anyone is interested in helping with this process, please let myself or Jason know. There is a lot to do and we are very busy people. Thanks. Regards, Ethan On Thu, Nov 5, 2009 at 8:48 AM, Don Begley <donbegley@...> wrote:

Re: Vasulka's Manipulated Image footage and picsDavid asked me for instructions on how to use the footage from the JVC
camera at the Complex so I thought I'd post them here for general info. Those who already know this, please forgive. Any one with a better approach, please jump in. There are three ways I know of to make the proprietary .tod files from the JVC useful. One is to install the PC software from its software disk and use that package. I've looked at it but never used the PC software so I can't offer an opinion on this approach. The other two approaches are for Macs. The first allows native processing in iMovie and the second allows processing in QuickTIme, MPEG Streamclip of similar software. The iMovie approach is the simplest but you have to record in 1440CBR mode on the camera. If you remember to set it up this way, you can transfer the video files directly (almost) to iMovie via a firewire connection. It's almost direct because you have to create a playlist on the JVC and place the files in it; then you transfer the folder to iMovie. See http://media.camcorder.jvc.com/movies/iMovie.mov for details. The final method requires the $20 QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. With it, Quicktime can play .tod directly. There are usually many .tod files for a Complex event. You make a single movie by adding the, one at a time, to the end of a Quicktime file and saving the file as a .mov when finished. (There is also a free QT component from JVC here: http://www2.cli.co.jp/products/ne/update_qtc_for_gzhd7/ qtc3e_update.htm.) I much prefer the free MPEGStreamclip, which has a batch mode that lets you convert all the .tod files into a single mp4 or other format. Unfortunately, it is very slow--as in _hours_ to convert a Complex event. The JVC FAQ for Mac apps is here: http://support.jvc.com/consumer/support/support.jsp?pageID=1&item=19#299 There may be newer approaches today. VisualHub was supposed to be a good option but it was discontinued. FilmRedux is supposed to be its reincarnation: http://www.filmredux.techline4teens.com/ -d- _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.sfcomplex.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss http://www.nabble.com/sfComplex-Discuss-f33403.html |
