Vent: extensions directory

Just a personal vent, I hate the new policy of the extensions directory.

I wrote a short little plugin and decided since the number of lines of code were soooo small, the proper license for it was "Public Domain".  I had to "wrap" my public domain plugin in a GPL license to publish it there.

While I understand the desire to remove the commercial and other Open Source licenses from the directory, the pure GPL policy is annoying.

Amen, brother! That's one of the things I said when I heard about the
new direction the JED was taking. FIRST, excluding GPL-incompatible
extensions simply prods the community to come up with their own JED
that is useful to everyone, not just a select group; and SECOND, by
requiring GPL-only, the project shut their eyes and plugged their ears
to many, many other FOSS licenses that are totally compatible with the
GPL.

So, given the current discussion about the organization methods of
Joomla and Drupal, does this give a big edge to Drupal?

My personal choice is Joomla because I have a book on it, I've worked
with it a little, and I know at least one former core-developer. From a
technocratic perspective, I have no idea which is better or why, except
what I read here. Even then you guys are sometimes over my head.

For me, Joomla is the entrenched heavyweight, and Drupal the brash
young upstart with a swagger.

Both have large enough communities behind them that you are in good
hands - and the best part about this is that you should be just fine
whichever you choose.

I'm actually ok with the excluding of GPL incompatible licenses.  I might not like it, but it seems to me that if the bulk of the current team feels that way, it seems good to me.

I just don't like excluding GPL compatible licenses.  There is no reason, other than a desire to force others to use GPL, to reject a public domain license.  There can be no arguement about wanting to give people choices and freedom and at the same time reject a public domain license.
