DC's INSTALL file recommends 1.8.3, but looking at
http://www.rubyonrails.org/down it says "definitely not 1.8.3".

So, source installs of 1.8.4 the best way to go nowadays?

1.8.4 should be ok, although i haven't tried it myself (only tried 1.8.3).
