Howdy People,

I’d like to post a question about DNS, that is:

Some time ago was illegal do use a CNAME record on the domain root, ex:

Domain.com => CNAME maria.domain.pt

And on the root domain “domain.com” it’s only possible to define an IP addrr.

Does this still true or there was any change on the subject?

For hosting, if I could set the domain root with a CNAME, when I change IP address I only have the need to change in one place.

Jorge.

Should also note some OS' local caches/resolvers do not support CNAMEs well i.e. windows XP.

Kind Regards

James Greig

Thank you both!

Well it could be something new to make this possible.
Now I understand 100% why many many domains doesn't have an A record on the
root domain, lazy people!
They just want to create a CNAME on the WWW alias and done.
I get mad with that!!!!!!!
A domain is: domain.com, and not www.domain.com, ok the WWW alias became
very used over the years and there's nothing I can do to make users change
on their behavior, to use domain.com instead of www.domain.com, they even do
when I as:

Me: "go to the browser and type manual.domain.com"
User: "doesn't work"
Me: "what did you typed?"
User: "www.manual.domain.com"
Me: "grrrrrrr I SAID manual.domain.com, NOT www.manual.domain.com"

But... oh well, nothing we can do about it, just live with it!

Jorge,

I feel with you :-)

I hate that too, I always just type domain.com into the browser, and I'm
upset when they don't support that. And the users "auto-www" typing
makes me mad too. But that's live ;-)

PS: we are a small ISP, and *always* configure domain.com also. :-)

I know it's still very hot in Portugal, but I thought they meant the
weather not the people ;-)
Remember: We have *winter* and *snow* here in Austria, this weekend
starts the skiing season. Yeah!

PS: And again, you missed a word from my sentence.
