Wallstreet Backlight problem v10.2

I recently fired up my son's Wallstreet II G3/266 Powerbook and applied the
updates for v10.2 to bring it current.? Unfortunately, I've run back into a
problem with the backlight of the system.? For some reason the backlight with
just go off and will refuse to come back on until the system is restarted.? You
can still see the screen with a flashlight.? I did not have this problem under
v10.0 and there is no problem running MacOS v9.2.2.? v10.1 couldn't be install
on this machine because of a kernel incompatibility with v10.1.? I've
turned off
all the powersaving stuff and it will still just blank the screen out for no
reason.? I haven't tried v10.3 yet.? Any suggestions?? Thanx

I'm using the same PowerBook for compiling the Packman 10.3 packages.

When exactly occurs the problem? I do have a problem after Suspend2RAM,
most time the backlight keeps blank. It helps to use the brightness
down or up bottom (if you have used 100% brightness before suspend, you
have to use the down buttom). I've added a little script to set the
brightnes to 80% in the pbbuttons process which is executed after
wakeup.
Do you use pbbuttons or pmud? I'm using pbbuttons.

Not a clue what I am using.  Whatever the stock stuff that opensuse
install is being used.  It doesn't matter what I am doing.  I had
started it and switched to init 3 to do some file maintenance and it
ended up blanking out in the middle of something.  it just literally
goes out no matter what I do.  You could be surfing the net and leave
it inactive for a minute and then it's out.  I use this on my BootX
command line:

video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:32.mclk:71

Got that from Olaf a long time ago.  Seems to make the video work
properly with those settings.  And, I used the exact same settings
under v10.0 with no problems.

On another note, what processor are you using?  I am looking to
upgrade this to a G4/500 in the hops that it will play movies(xvids
and stuff) properly.  I had a G3/466 and it was too slow.  I use
MPlayer for video playing.  Thanx

Take a look at the runlevel editor.

video=atyfb:vmode:14,cmode:8 hda=autotune root=/dev/hda9
resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent showopts

I'm using the originial G3/266 MHz. I've tried to add a Upgrade card
about four years ago and killed the PowerBook. I've repared it in
October (bought another by eBay and got both to work ;-) ).
I've much better framerates in xine based players then in MPlayer.
Video-CD's work, DivX/mp4 up to 500x300 work fine, S-VCD, DVB-T
recordings or Video-DVD's cost to much CPU power...

What am I looking for?  I've never messed with that stuff before.
Never had any reason to.  I did stop powersaved, but that didn't make
any difference.  Interestingly enough, it was on all night last night
after I ran a movie on it and let it sit, but after shutdown, restart
and leaving it set today, it's off again.....

I never cared for Xine.  I've been using Mplayer for about 2 years
now.  d/l, compile and forget.  Plays pretty much everything.  I can
get playback with the lavdopts that Mplayer suggests for using on slow
systems, but the size is small, and it's grainy when maximized....oh
well.

Actually, I installed a copy of SuSE v8.1 on an old laptop, and it had
Mplayer installed as default.  Considering that I had been using SuSE
since v5.3, I must not have paid any attention to it back then.

You should take a look if you use pmud or pbbuttonsd. Powersaved can not
handle PMU directly, but pmud and pbbuttonsd do have a APM
compatiblitiy layer which can be used by powersaved.

And no Updates until now? I hope, you do not whatch files out of the
internet...
Add Packman to your installsource, and keep it up to date.

pbbuttonsd is running.  pmud isn't installed.  I'm looking at my
install to see if I can add it.  Which on do you use?

Actually, I have a copy of SuSE v9.1 on my Dell Dual Xeon 500 that I
still use, and it has an old copy of MPlayer and I have the plugin for
Firefox, and it seems to work fine with most things even now.

Actually, I do update it when I see a newer version.  I tried
installing packman stuff awhile back, but ran into problems.
Compiling it from source works best for me.

It's not a question of supported formats, but have you ever heard about
security?
