I'm not sure unity is a the best tool for 2d work.
Moai or corona is probably a better fit.

Also, Unity Technologies will port your game for you,  to ANY
platform, including LG Smart TV's, Airlne Game Systems etc, if there
is potential to make money from it.

Oh? cool. I've just spoken to a few people who've complained that the 2d tools (like level editing sort of stuff) isn't great using unity (which is really focused on 3d). 

Are there 3rd party tools for unity like http://www.mapeditor.org/?

I've just heard unhappy-gamedev-rumblings from people using it for 2D; so my comments were really just anecdotal ~

Yes, there are many tools like that. If you have Unity, just open the
Asset Store menu item under the Window menu. Heaps of tools and assets
for whatever you can imagine... :)

As I understand it yes, you need to upgrade to Pro. But pretty much every
game engine I've come across has required a cash payment in order to export
to devices.

Can't you get the free unity base plus eg the iOS addon for $400?

It looks like there's a lot of nice stuff in pro, but for $3000 ($1500 each for unity pro and then iOS pro), couldn't you do without it?


To get both iOS and Android would presumably be $4500 for pro or $800 otherwise.

You pay a one off fee in terms of memory for a ticket to ride on
Unity, which is the size of the runtime but otherwise it's perfectly
performant for a very large number of use cases. That one time cost
isn't especially high for a the benefits gained. While Unity doesn't
necessarily out of the box lend itself to 2D work, there is a large
community of folks who've solved all the bigger problems of 2D on
Unity for you. Even without purchase of one of the affordable 2D
toolkits, there is a wealth of freely available information within the
community for making 2D happen easily on Unity.

Basically, if you can afford it and some tools to make 2D life a little easier then Unity and the community around it are amazing, but you're looking at $800 and upwards depending on the features you need (the non-pro versions go a long way but depending on exactly what the game you're planning is it may be necesary to upgrade)
If you're looking at a smaller project that can't justify that cost (the time and trouble you'll save from using unity does amortise the cost on a longer, more complex project) then I'd reccomend having a look at Moai. It's free and open source (they make their money mainly through other non-free services such as cross platform monetisation and content hosting) and runs on all the major platforms without needing to pay anything (btw, no cross platform frameworks run on windows phone since you have to use XNA which no other platform has)
It's relatively new but is in very active development and starting to get some serious attention with Doublefine Adventure and the new Shadowrun game using Moai.
I'm currently a few months into a project using Moai and it's quite enjoyable to work with. When I started the learning curve was a little steep but since coming out of beta the documentation and tutorials have gotten a lot better and the forums are active and helpful, with Moai developers being active on there too.

Just to pimp my jsGamesoup library a little bit, here are the platforms
I have games working on with it right now:

  * IE6+, Firefox, Chrome, Safari browsers
  * Android 2.2+ phone & tablet (native support via PhoneGap)
  * iPad (tested in Safari browser, not native yet)
  * Mac dashboard widget

I am going to be doing ports to the following platforms soon:

  * iPhone (with PhoneGap)
  * Mac OSX, Linux, Windows with XULRunner.

Will let you know how those go. I have worked with both before sans
jsGamesoup though and they work great so I'm 99% sure I will have total
mainstream desktop and iPhone coverage as soon as I get a chance to
verify those two.

That said, there are significant downsides to using jsGameSoup:

  * Not that widely used, no real community to speak of (I really need
to set up a forum like people keep asking).
  * Javascript in HTML5 is slow - not all types games will work well.
  * Lots of rough edges - you will probably have to hack lots of stuff

Chris, on the subject of jsGameSoup - there's currently a thread in r/gamedev on Reddit that mentions it when asking for advice about JS engines. I put in a good word and someone else commented that they use it as well, might be cool if the original poster heard from the actual creator though as they were looking for some specific things from an engine and jsGameSoup was one that stood out to them:
