Website/service problems over the last week?

There seem to have been sporadic problems (but persistent over shortish
periods of time) with the web service and loading albums into Picard (I
suspect other software is affected also) over the past week or two.

I have experienced this myself several times when tagging more than one
or two albums, and there have been a number of reports from users and
two bugs logged in FB [1]. This usually points to a wider problem; since
few people will go to the effort of reporting an issue.

It's manifested as the regular "couldn't load album error" in Picard,
with timeouts as well as lines like
E: <sip.voidptr object at 0x00FD06A0> 12:03:01 u'Unknown error' in
Picard's logs. Often this single error can break all the other queued
requests behind it due to Picard's dodgy error handling on HTTP requests.

Does anyone know if there is something wrong? Is this related to the
network reshuffle? [2] Or just some sort of load problem?

Chad

PS: It's OK right now, for what it's worth!

There are/were two issues I am aware of:

1. Dave Evans continues to streamline our network operations and sadly
there was a hiccup that caused some downtime on sunday. That problem
has been fixed.
2. The Tagger icons emitted by our search server are currently buggy: http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5416
We have a fix for this and we're working to push the changes out
today.

Sadly, this information isn't very useful.

The best place to start when you're experiencing problems is to do a
tracereoute to musicbrainz.org . If you find any anomalies in the
traceroute, save the output and find me on IRC. In order to
effectively report network troubles to Digital West, we need to
provide them with traceroutes in BOTH directions. Last time we
provided traceroutes from various places, they fixed a problem in
minutes.

If traceroutes look clean, then describe the problems you're having in
detail -- something reproducable would of course be best.

When is it now planned for this fix to be deployed? It still doesn't
appear to be resolved, and unfortunately it's probably obfuscating
tracking down any other potential issues with users.

Cheers

Dave and Paul are working on it this weekend -- my hopes are for it to be pushed out sometime between today and tuesday. Sorry for the delay!

search_server/trunk rev. 12168 is now live.  (Thanks for the tip for testing,
luks!).

Thanks, it's looking good at a quick glance. Let's see if any other
further issues crop up for users now. :-)
