"Across the Great Divide" [New bridge below Hoover dam]

As a bridgephile, and having done that "dam road" probably 10 times bunches
of years ago (cage), I'm regretful at not watching this from the start.
Slide 9 is the best overview showing the corkscrew road on the Arizona side
behind the majestic construction.

I was out in Vegas back in March of this year and rented a car and
took a tour of Hoover Dam.  The pictures don't do the
bridge justice. It is fu**ing HUGE.  The guys (and gals) working on
the bridge have the biggest sets of you-know-what to
be climbing around up there. It's got to be at least 20 stories up.
If it's not, it's still one hell of a drop into the river from
up there.

And, after driving to the Dam, I can see why they need a bigger road.
The traffic was as bad as DC rush hour. It took
me over three hours to go 2 miles...right behind some yahoo who rented
a Cobra A/C who would let the cars in front
of him get about three car lengths ahead of him then he'd gun the car
and race up and stop...over and over and over while
he constantly reved the engine nonstop.

*sigh*...gotta love touristas....

While I imagine that Truckers and other people who are in a hurry will love
the bridge, I can't help but wonder if they're going to close off the old
road over the dam to traffic after the bridge opens.

It seems like a "Homeland Security" type of thing to do. :-(

One of my favorite things to do, when I lived in Vegas, was to drive
out to the dam on a summer night, temps still in the 80's, and walk
across the dam.  The angel statues are particularly impressive at
night, almost surreal.

The best time to beat the traffic to the dam was between 1-2 AM, the
only downside was that all the public spaces were closed at night.
For a bit of trivia, you can see a birds-eye (bats-eye?) view of the
dam overflow tubes by renting the movie "Cherry 2000."  Cheesy movie,
but they apparently managed to lower a car down one of the tubes for
the movie, pretty funny to see the scenes set all around the dam, but
the movie is set in a future when the dam was supposed to be
destroyed, so they don't show the dam itself.
