What do I need to buy from 4D to develop in Active4D v11?

Hello everyone,

I am about to buy the remainder of the product I need to develop in Active4D
in 4D v11 (yes, I know it's not available just yet). I currently own 4D
Developer Pro v11.4 (Windows), but I need to buy some variant of 4D server
to test client/server code, and I am not sure what I need. I've been
developing in 4D for ages, but I am totally new to Active4D.

I want to architect a 4D system that does the following:
 (1) Allows client/server interaction on a small scale (2 or 3 clients)
 (2) Use Active4D for scalable web interaction (I don't need Web 2.0,
Ajax, etc. Active4D will be *the* web face)
 (3) Lets me test Active4D apps, so I'll need a web server that's easy
to set up, but not necessarily able to support lots of users

What else do I need to buy from 4D?
 - I believe I need 4D Server, but I am not sure if I need  "4D Server" or
"4D Web App Server".
 - Do I need "4D Web Application Expansion" for "4D Server"? I don't know
what this does.
 - Do I need "4D Web Services Expansion" for "4D Server"? I don't know what
this does.

What should I use as a development web server?

Thanks in advance.

Steve,

what you need is:

* 4D Developer Professional (SingleUser)
it supports one internal and one external IP addresss, you can't
extend this

* 4D Server v11
   -> has 2 users (clients) buildt-in
-> you can extend the users (up to 500, according to 4D)
-> you need a "4D Web Application Extension" to activate more then
one external IP address
-> you do not need the "4D Web Services"

If you can convince your customer doing everything over the web, then
you need instead of the "4D Server" a "4D Web Application Server" -
carefull: that's the good old "4D Runtime Classic", just web enabled.
The term "server" is a little misleading here, because it is the "Web
Server".

Thank you, Peter, for the speedy reply.

What exactly is 4D's "Web Application Expansion" option for 4D Server?
Will I need it to develop in Active4D (for 4D v11)?  I don't need Web 2.0,
Ajax, etc.
Under what conditions would I need to "activate more then one external IP
address"?

No. Just for developing the included 1 external/1 internal ip address
is ok. It's just a little difficult for debugging. Normally you just
tell various people "have a look at my new website". If more the one
is doing this, one gets your real bugs and the other ones will tell
you they can't reach your server. And they will formulate it so,that
you don't know who is who. :)

Yes.

It's a real pain, that the 4D Developer version can't be expanded.

Look at the one called "Web App Server". For all intents and purposes, you'll probably pay $129 for it, and it looks like the best low-end solution for testing a site.

Think of it as "Runtime" + "Web Server". Just waiting to add A4Dv5 to it :)

I don't see what the harm is to allow a different kind of limitation, say.. throttle the number of hits per minute, etc.

-> you need a "4D Web Application Extension" to activate more then one external IP address

For my money, I'm more tempted to implement Active4D + NTK instead. Then I don't have to deal with the hassle of deciding how many implementations I may need to run temporarily, nor deciding whether I want a "Server" license, or a "Client" license for the Web Server.

All this, I hope, will change for the better when 4D goes the "Apache" route. Right now, the web development picture is insane.. and I'm grateful that Active4D is available as an alternative :)

If one of the components of this is "Runtime", can you use the debugger to
troubleshoot back end 4D code?

It was strongly hinted that the web-engine embedded in 4D will be replaced by something.. the Apache logo was tucked away in the far corner of that slide. Summit 2008 at Long Beach.

The current web engine is based on the WebStar BSD codebase, and I understand the sole programmer responsible for maintaining it is no longer around.

How this will happen, i.e. how integrated 4D+Apache will be is something that we should hear about in the near future.

Is that enough for your needs? It was a just a statement of what's next on the chopping block for future versions of 4D.

I wasn't at the Summit so I missed this. It will be interesting to see
what 4D does.

Take a look at this video.. it shows a converted and unoptimized customer application running on a 24-core server, with 500+1 connected clients.

http://www.4d.com/products/benchmarks/scalabilitytest20081203.html

In comparison, the web engine is looking like a real bottleneck now.

No mention of PHP.. it's really unrelated to Apache, right?

What was discussed briefly, that "something" in the future would generate JSON instead of just only XML.
And 4D's focus will turn from AJAX to AJAJ..(Async JavaScript w/ JSON)

Again, Active4D is way ahead of the curve here :)

Agreed.

If you're using AJAX then Active4D's a4d.json library and
a4d.utils.cud make the back end _very_ easy!

I'm VERY happy to hear that someone is making good use of
a4d.utils.cud. That little gem definitely saves massive amounts of
coding.

Yes indeed - saves massive amounts of very tedious and (therefore, in
my case at least) error prone coding :-)
