What does "Failed to receive a reply from the session manager" mean?

I select the XFCE menu, "logout", the "Shutdown"

When nothing happens, I do it again.

That is when I get the message "Failed to receive a reply from the session
manager"

XFCE is trying to help me, I just don't know what it is trying to say.
