If it is religios or not, that is not the point, I think. It’s just a
waste of time reading it. So write such things in your signature and
everybody’s fine …

So now some are trying to tell people what they may or may not say on
the linux thinkpad mailing list.... Get over it, if you don't like it
don't read it. Simple.
PS. I apologize for the top posting frickin' blackberry....

You should accept that several others will find the application of the
term "nonsense" to "religious belief" to be equally offensive, whatever
their personal belief may be.

TTBOMK, the intro line used is (or at least: was) considered an accepted
(maybe even the preferred) way in Muslim world to introduce some talk.
Yes, it sounds strange to (us) non-Muslims, but IMO that doesn't warrant
such a strong reaction.

Yes, it is better for the climate on this list to use more neutral
terms, and I personally think the usual "Hallo", "Dear readers", "Fellow
Thinkpad users" and many variations are adequate.

I still hope nobody objects when I use the (equally Muslim origin)
"Peace be with you!", explicitly including a peaceful communication on
this list (to which we all can and should contribute).

I'm sure I could come up with a few ways to start a message that others
would find offensive. I find religious belief to be offensive, perhaps
even an obscenity. There's no room for such nonsense here.

What there's no room for is intolerance. A private note should have sufficed, James. And if it doesn't change the behavior, please keep in mind why we're on the list: to help others and get help now and then.

There's no need to be too formal... or uptight.

(But I'll add that I'd prefer the content stay on topic.)

Chris

There is a certain chicken-and-egg problem with your proposed solution.  ;-)

Sorry but I always think saying things like "if you dont like it..." are
pretty silly. Religion doesn't belong on this list (unless you're
discussing the use of Linux and Thinkpads in a church :-)

You are correct =)

But, I still feel like certain people are trying to police the list.
This IMO is not the correct action to take, as has been pointed out by
many users here.
It's a public mailing list that is here to help all walks of life,
human or not, in that respect many have different beliefs and or
customs.  So, just be a little more "open" minded, you know kind of
like the mantra most of us preach........

Intolerance offends me too. Up to a point, when I become intolerant
myselft, and stop tolerating the intolerant people.
