I used this VoIpCheap site and was happy -- although sometimes the line was
bad at peak times especially for mobiles. Mostly I used their service for
free phone calls from landline to landline.

There are always pros and cons on VOIP. But it does worth a try for the money it saved.
Try magicJack for USD$19.95/year, not per month. With this yearly payment, You get a year of free long distance phone calls to any USA and Canada phone number. The voice quality is very good. And you get a USA phone number no matter where you live, which will be useful if you live oversea but got business or relatives living in the USA or Canada.

You can order the device from magicJack web directly if you are living in USA or Canada. Or, you can order from our web site If you are living in Canada or anyplace out of USA. (we ship products all over the world, magicJack only sends devices to USA and Canada.):

Unfortunately,  my MJ fell out of its flash port and hit the floor, and
I have not replaced it, nor have I located a place to send it for repair
or replacement. Any ideas, Funny?

Before I dropped it, the service was exemplary, much better than Vonage.

Greeting Bob,
I feel sad that your MJ is broken.
I have mine constantly located on top of my desktop by a good quality USB extension cable, the short cable comes in the package works but is not a high quality cable. The one comes with my USB thumb drive is longer, more flexible and has less voltage drop. My desktop only gets USB on the back of the panel, so use a longer cable seem working better than the original cable.

Actually you may contact magicJackonline support, I have send a private email to you with all the info we collected. Let us know what do you find.

For the moment, there is only online support available from magicJack. I hope they can improve their service better with such a good product concept.

I personally think it is one of the few voice communication innovation I haven't seen for many years. Even not count the three major highlights:, a USA phone number, the price, and voice quality it provides.

Funny,

I can't seem to understand why is this magicJack needs an external device
for their service? It still needs a computer anyway, so would not it be
better simply just install a software on that computer? (just like SkyPe)

Thanks,
Tamas

I think the point is that MJ allows you to use a "real" phone.

Indeed, I like the idea of no device.
The magicJack went a different approach, the external device will keep your phone number and other phone number of contacts list, phone call histories, etc. It includes a dsp engine which encodes voice in a better quality than PC microphone. It is also used to connect a regular phone.

I have used both regular phone and microphone, apparently, the voice quality on regular phone is much better than the microphone over magicJack service. I have hooked 4 regular phone on one magicJack at the same time without an issue. When I talk, I am used to regular phone, which is better than a  PC speaker and microphone.

Ebay is trying to spin off Skype, so how long that free VOIP service will last, we will see. Another down point for skype is, it is hard to get regular phone number, so local people cannot call you back.

I see. Actually the best thing would be if magicJack would not need a PC,
right? Because if that provides you a regular phone no. then your PC has to
be constantly switched on if you want to be accessible pretty much as it was
a regular phone.

Anyway, I do not know if SkyPe will become a payed service or not, but at
this time I have my mobile with SkyPe on it and pretty much I can use it
free of charge (the only condition is to use KyPe on mobile is to topping up
the mobile every month by at least 10 euros which then can be used for
ordinary mobile calls). This is important to me as I live here in Ireland,
my younger sister in Luxembourg, my elder one + parents + friends are back
in Hungary so without this it would be kind of hard to keep in touch with
them. Previously SkyPe (or other SIP service) was only on the computer so it
had to organise the call or had to be lucky to get me online.

If I understand the MJ USB device is only as an extra for use an ordinary
phone, but also you can use MJ without it? How do you use MJ anyway? Is your
home computer on all the time, or you use it for business so the office
computer is on anyway during the office hours, or have it on a server that
you use for other purpose as well?

Thanks
Tamas

Right. I knew magicJack has being working on this standalone device concept for quite a long time, but they didn't announce any products yet. Cost and performance would be the major challenge for this design. (The owner of the company is famous in providing good telecommunication service at a fair price. )

The current magicJack was designed as an cell phone extension (most likely business users), when people enters a building (some time, the cell signal is weak in the buildings here in north America) which has wifi or internet, the cell user can then forward all cell phone incoming calls to their magicJack phone number. It wasn't designed to replace regular land line phone at all. (Though the market study from MJ shows there are a high take rate on replacing land line phones and unusual high take rate from people >55 years old, the 2nd result is unexpected.)

>This is important to me as I live here in Ireland,

I see. This would be a bit harder when using magicJack, which requires each one of your family owns a magicJack device. I do see some oversea online business owner like the MJ device, which makes them easy to call their north America customer without a worry of high phone bills, and their customer can make a direct phone call to MJ phone number too.

The device is a must have, it stores/initializes a PC program which makes phone calls on any internet connected computer. It also stores your USA phone number, major contact phone list, phone call histories, etc.

>How do you use MJ anyway?

There are 3 conditions must be met to use MJ service:
1. High speed internet, such as: wifi, dsl, cable internet, etc.
2. a PC
3. a magicJack device

I have seen people use it for home and business. As a matter of time, our business phone is a MJ phone number, when I am on business travel, I can always receive phone calls, check my voice mail, or call back customers when I settle down in a Hotel with Wifi connection (Free service in most North America hotels these days). All I have to bring is my laptop and my MJusb dongle (the MJ device you referred).

If I understand the MJUSB device is only as an extra for use an ordinary
phone, but also you can use MJ without it? How do you use MJ anyway? Is your
home computer on all the time, or you use it for business so the office
computer is on anyway during the office hours, or have it on a server that
you use for other purpose as well?

Thanks
Tamas

Ah I see, so the "magic" is that you can carry this device with you anywhere
and as soon as you plug it into virtually any computer your phone line goes
alive. Easier to install + you keep your privacy by holding the call list
and other logs on the device. That's actually a good concept.

Ok, it all makes sense now. Thanks for the info.

<heavy snipped>

I am using pfingo.com, they have local phone number for Australia,
China, UK , USA and Singapore.  With this number, you are also
reachable by normal landline or mobile line.

You can install the pfingo client on PC (just like any other VOIP
client), and also on supported smart mobile phone.

My usage is through my mobile phone, so I just choose any
number/contact I want to dial from the phone contact list, and instead
dialing through normal voice call, I choose internet call.  The phone
shall connect to pfingo if it is not already connected.  I do not have
a data plan for my mobile phone, so the connection is through the wifi
access point.

For a mobile SOHO, I got a unlimited mobile broadband connected to a
3G wifi router (Aztech HW550 S$79).  With this setup, I got my
internet and telephony for a subscription plan of US$10 per month.
Shall be adding a wifi IP Camera to the setup later.  Disruptive
technology, this is it.

Key points: local number, no additional device, work seamlessly with
smart mobile phone, work with mobile broadband.

What is 3G wifi? Is this the same as 3G cell phone data service? If
so, aren't there very severe limits on the amount of data you can
transfer via such a connection? Also, I thought that such service was
typically about $30/month, not $10/month (based on looking into it on
Verizon in the USA).

Verizon, and others, typically limit the 'unlimited' service to 5GB
per month in the US.  Other than that it's full speed ahead.

Keep in mind that 5GB is 15kbps (kbits/second) which is sufficient for
compressed voice calls.  This means you can run a voice line 24/7 on a
verizon 3G wireless connection and it shouldn't trip their limit.

3G wifi router, this is what the shopkeeper here (Singapore) refers to
the router with wifi that can connect to mobile broadband.

We have minimum 1Mbps download speed, but I think the upload speed
(356Kbps) is the limiting factor.  From my testing, it is OK to do
VOIP but one has to keep the connection open like running some
background DDNS updating task.  Bandwidth though is shared with all
users which can be a problem in a congested spot, one good thing is
congested spot here normally have free wifi access point.

S$15.00 (US$10) was my plan with a 24 month contract, it dropped to
S$11 (US$7.80) in a promotion recently.

Here is something interesting about Google Voice:

"Google
Voice gives people an additional phone number that's not tied to any
one phone line. People can program the service to direct incoming calls
to their cell phone, home or work numbers. Users can get e-mail
transcripts of voice mails through the service. It can also be used to
send text messages and place calls - even international ones - at low
rates paid to Google, not the carriers, though those calls do use cell
phone plan minutes."

I have Google voice, though I don't use it much.  Right now they don't
really use VOIP to the end user (though I'm sure they do internally).
It does everything using the telephone network.  They essentially
bought Grand Central and updated a few aspects of it (though there's
more to come, I'm sure).

You set it up to dial one or more of your regular phone numbers when
someone calls your google voice number - so for instance I can set it
to dial my home phone and my cell phone, and decide which to answer if
I'm at home, knowing that if I'm away from home I can still get the
call on my cell.

You have a lot of rule based control - add people to your phone book
and add them to groups.  So all my family might call my google number
and it'll ring all my phones (home, work, cell), but a client my only
trigger my work phone.  Simplifies phone number management because you
give the same number to everyone, and set the rules up later just like
you do in email.

The other two major features are free web-based call back.  I can put
a widget on my website that allows someone to enter their phone
number.  Google will call them, and then call me, and connect us.
This eliminates dial-out charges for many people (ie, it's almost like
a free 800 number - since Google is originating both calls, then it
doesn't use long distance minutes for home users).

It also has voice transcription.  If someone leaves a voice message,
it's transcribed and sent to your email so you can treat voice
messages just like email.  You can, of course, listen to voice
messages from any phone by dialing in, or via the website or your
gmail account.

Things I'm waiting for - number portability (they, of course, have to
comply with transferring your number from them, but they can't yet
transfer numbers into their network), fax send and recieve (do
everything via email!), and VOIP endpoints (such as making/taking
calls through my PC or iphone regardless of where I am - but magicjack
would solve that issue).

It'll be interesting to see what they do with it.

What is the best VOIP service ?

My parents are in a company called Lightyear Wireless -- they sell a *really
* good VOIP product: http://www.house.mywirelessrep.com/voip.html

I believe it costs $25 a month. We use it at our house, and most of our
relatives have purchased boxes from us. It works very well.
