What pgm reads the /etc/network/interfaces file? (Installation WPA worked great! Too bad I messed with it!)After installing Ubuntu 8.04 (from 2008/06/14) my wireless worked great. But then I noticed it was picking up its IP address from DHCP so I changed it to static. At least, that's all I remember doing. Anyway, now Ubuntu doesn't connect to my WIFI router anymore when I start the system. I have to re-enter the WPA key into the nm-applet - about 12 clear-text characters, and then everything works fine again. But the next time I start Ubuntu, the 12 dots are replaced with enough dots to cover the encrypted version (which has been encrypted correctly and stored in /etc/network/interfaces) - when I re-enter the clear-text (which is covered by dots), I'm connected again. It's like, the system is taking the argument to wpa-psk (as written by nm-applet) as if it it's clear text! -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... Oh God, I hear that music playing again. Sure there are issues with NetworkManager - but there are issues with Wicd too, and it's not as well supported by Ubuntu. I see 14 bugs filed against wicd, all but 1 one of them still "New" - they're not getting much action. Network-manager has far more open bugs (565) but 60% of them are getting _some_ attention. Sure, go ahead install wicd but don't expect to be able to get much help if it doesn't work. -- derek -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... It was a _suggestion_ to _look into installing wicd_. He was also provided with links to bugs that may, or may not, assist him in figuring out the issue with NM. There was no "music playing", simply advise. If you have something better to advise to help the OP sort out the problem, then please post it. -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... The keychain password is set on install to be the same as the users password. If you change the user's password thru 'passwd' it doesn't update the keychain password - it will still be the same as it ever was. If you can't retrieve it, you can delete the keychain and start a new one called 'login'. Give it the same password as the user and it will unlock on login. Sure, but every time somebody has a network issue, _somebody_ has to suggest that wicd is a good alternative, without ever suggesting that it has it's own problems and far less support than Network Manager. I have nothing against wicd, but unless you have good reason to believe that it _will_ fix the OP's problem, I don't think it's very responsible to suggest he ditch NM for it. -- derek -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@...
