What pgm reads the /etc/network/interfaces file? (Installation WPA worked great! Too bad I messed with it!)

After installing Ubuntu 8.04 (from 2008/06/14) my wireless worked great.  But then I noticed it was picking up its IP address from DHCP so I changed it to static.  At least, that's all I remember doing.

Anyway, now Ubuntu doesn't connect to my WIFI router anymore when I start the system.

I have to re-enter the WPA key into the nm-applet - about 12 clear-text characters, and then everything works fine again.  But the next time I start Ubuntu, the 12 dots are replaced with enough dots to cover the encrypted version (which has been encrypted correctly and stored in /etc/network/interfaces) - when I re-enter the clear-text (which is covered by dots), I'm connected again.

It's like, the system is taking the argument to wpa-psk (as written by nm-applet) as if it it's clear text!

You should not use /etc/network/interfaces to store configuration
information when using NetworkManager. NM stores configuration in itself.

There are issues with NM:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/339046>
[Wireless WPA key corrupted]
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/291260>
[seahorse does not show original wpa passphrase]
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=557382
[WPA password changes into hash, not properly stored]

Were I you, I'd look into installing wicd...

Oh God, I hear that music playing again.  Sure there are issues with
NetworkManager - but there are issues with Wicd too, and it's not as well
supported by Ubuntu.  I see 14 bugs filed against wicd, all but 1 one of
them still "New" - they're not getting much action.  Network-manager has far
more open bugs (565) but 60% of them are getting _some_ attention.

Sure, go ahead install wicd but don't expect to be able to get much help if
it doesn't work.

It was a _suggestion_ to _look into installing wicd_. He was also
provided with links to bugs that may, or may not, assist him in figuring
out the issue with NM. There was no "music playing", simply advise. If
you have something better to advise to help the OP sort out the problem,
then please post it.

FWIW, so far, I haven't needed any help on wicd with dhcp or static IPs.  That's what I want in a NM aplication.-:O) Note the smiley

In fact, it was right on (although I still don't have a solution).  These bug reports are very similar to my problem.

I think I'm going to try a little longer with the default installation for now though, unless I really can't get it to work.  It doesn't seem like it should be so hard...

I actually have a feeling for what's going on ... I'll bet that the wpa passphrase is stored somewhere else in /etc by the default installation, but that NetworkManager re-writes the /etc/network/interfaces file in a way that disconnects it from the original automatic authentication mechanism ...

Okay, I can add some detail to this problem.

For one thing, I think the thing I changed in NetworkManager that screwed things up was that I un-checked the Roaming-Mode box.  I thought that was an unconfigured state when nm-applet started up, but I believe now that that was the correct configuration set up by the installation system.

When I check the Roaming-Mode box, I can put in my network passphrase and I am then on the internet.

But then I get a new problem.  A dialog pops up from nowhere (I hate it that linux wants to be so much like windows) and informs me that nb-applet wants to write to the keychain, and that I need to put in the keychain password.

Well, this is neither the root password nor the current user password.  I can't find or remember it (and I don't usually forget passwords).

Can anyone tell me how I can reset the keychain password - without knowing it in advance (I *have* the root password)?

The keychain password is set on install to be the same as the users
password.   If you change the user's password thru 'passwd' it doesn't
update the keychain password - it will still be the same as it ever
was.

If you can't retrieve it, you can delete the keychain and start a new
one called 'login'.  Give it the same password as the user and it will
unlock on login.

Sure, but every time somebody has a network issue, _somebody_ has to suggest
that wicd is a good alternative, without ever suggesting that it has it's
own problems and far less support than Network Manager. I have nothing
against wicd, but unless you have good reason to believe that it _will_ fix
the OP's problem, I don't think it's very responsible to suggest he ditch NM
for it.

That did the trick.  Works perfectly now.  Thank you.

I didnt read carefully the first time, unfortunately, and didnt set the keychain password to be the same as the login password.  As a consequence, I got the keychain prompt again.  Once I made the two passwords the same, ubuntu starts up connected.  Roaming mode was the key.

Im still curious what the chain of events is that lead to some pgm putting up that keychain prompt (when the passwords dont match).  I wish linux would improve on windows by not allowing anonymous actions.  At the very least, maybe there should be a /var/log/dialogs, where all dialogs need to register themselves and their callers...

Thanks again,
CTS
