Where do I set screen resolution in xfce4 4.6

I have just upgraded my system to xubuntu 9.04 and among other
problems I can't see how to change the display resolution.

Where do I set the display resolution in xfce4 version 4.6?

menu--settings--display

You will have to make sure that you have the correct resolution in
xorg.conf

In Settings, don't you have an item which is called 'Display'? This lets
you set the resolution, refresh rate and orientation.

Ther haven't been any resolution settings in xorg.conf since at least
version 8.10.

No, since I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 there are far fewer things in
Settings.

You should probably complain with the distribution guys - I run Slackware
and XFCE 4.6.1, just installed on a clean disk, and 'Display' is available
here.

If you feel slightly adventurous, try to install it yourself:

Uhm, don't jump to conclusions regarding Xfce just because your
distribution _chooses_ not to include resolution settings in
xorg.conf. Xfce is not written for one particular distribution, and
setting the resolution in xorg.conf works just fine.

P.S. Of course the other comments are right though, there should be a
Settings->Display.

But a modern (as in the last year or so) Xorg doesn't set or expect
resolutions in xorg.conf.  I know it *can* still be done but it's
rather going against the intent of current versions of Xorg.  It
certainly shouldn't be necessary unless something has gone wrong.

Yes, so where has it gone and how do I get it back?  :-)

In my xfce when I right click on the background (or look in the
Applications menu on the panel) I do have Settings but there is no
Display entry there.  What provides it, i.e. what package in Ubuntu
provides it, maybe something has gong awry in various upgrades and
it's got lost in the wash.

What program gets run when you click on menu->settings->display?

I actually meant there's less in Settings->Settings Manager.  However
I do seem to have lost Settings->Display.  Is it an xfce4 program that
provides this or is it a Gnome utility?  Whatever it is if someone can
tell me what the name of the utility is I can see if it's installed,
if it's not installed I can install it and if it is installed I can
run it from the command line.

(N.B. I used to run Slackware for many years)

This is quickly turning into an ubuntu problem; but let's just say
that you need to learn your distro tools. Someone already pointed out
the name of the binary. Install apt-file, or use packages.ubuntu.com
to find out what package provides it.

Actually, you should go to Applications->Settings->Settings Manager and *then* click Display.

Who "pointed out the name of the binary.", am I missing something
because I didn't see it.

Anyway, things have advanced, removing a 'broken' package from my
installation and then doing a full update/upgrade has got my
Settings->Display applet to appear.  However it doesn't actually work,
i.e. it won't change the display resolution.

As you say though it's an Ubuntu problem rather than an xfce one so
I'll go over there to ask.  Thanks for the help so far.

For completeness' sake, I was mistaken and noone pointed it out. It's
called xfce4-display-settings though.

I hope you'll work it out somehow.

Well I'm mostly working again now, I have my 'proper' 1600x1200
resolution back using the DVI-D connection.  I didn't actually do
anything much, just kept doing update/upgrade until things seemed to
settle properly.

I do seem to have some issues with X starting up still, lots of odd
warning and error pop-ups before I get to the login screen.  I expect
I will get rid of them eventually though.

This is probably not what you are looking for; however, on my
FreeBSD-7.2 system I had to place this in the ~/.xinitrc file:

xrandr --size 1024x768 --rate 85
/usr/local/bin/startxfce4

Now, my screen starts up in in the proper resolution. It was the only
way to get it to work correctly and consistently.
