Why were the image tooltips removed?

I'm sure this question was asked and answered a while ago, but I can't
seem to find it through searching.

On the post screen there used to be pretty tooltips when you hovered
over the icons for "Add an Image," "Add a Video," etc.  Then after one
update, they were suddenly gone.  I hate explaining to clients how to
find the button to add an image, because it's just an icon with no
descriptive text.  At least the tooltip provided a big blatant label
when hovering.  Plus it looked nice.

Always wondering why it was removed....

The tolltips are still there in WP 2.9-rare. Check the HTML.

The 'pretty' tooltips certainly aren't.

I still see tooltips on my installs of 2.8. A yellow popup with text
describing each Add Media link comes up, no problem.

I'm referring to the stylized tooltips that were present in 2.5, but remove
shortly thereafter.

The "pretty" tooltips he's talking about were commented out of common.js here:
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/8785

They were a big deal in 2.5:
http://planetozh.com/blog/2008/04/how-to-use-wordpress-25-tooltips/

I do not know why they were removed. Can't figure it out.

Sounds like an easy fix for 2.9.  :-)

Thanks for the investigating Otto.

Probably removed due to browser compatibility.

They look like bloat to me, so I say "Good riddance".

Nevermind, looks like all that's gone from the current trunk.  I'm curious
to know why it was removed and if we can get it restored.

Scribu -   From the standpoint of usability, I think we at least need
descriptive text need to each media button.

Descriptive text is displayed well enough using native tooltips. The old
ones just add rounded corners.

TinyMCE in the frontend?

by Matthew Gerring :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Hello all.

I'm banging my head against the wall right now trying to get a TinyMCE
editor to show up on a front-end page.

I used the_editor(); , which works to an extent, until I actually try
to use the textarea it creates. Not only do the HTML buttons not do
anything, but I can't switch into TinyMCE mode. I get an undefined
function call.

I know that in order for TinyMCE to work you have to include a
boatload of JS and CSS, but there doesn't seem to be a complete list
anywhere, and all of the documentation on this I've seen is centered
on how to include TinyMCE in plugins, not in a front-end page, so the
filters I have to use are totally different.

Moreover, calling wp_tiny_mce(); at any point in a front-end page
causes the whole thing to whitescreen.

I'm using WPMU, although I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Does anyone know how to do this?

-Matthew

Right. The instructions in that message didn't work. wp_tiny_mce();
just causes WordPress to whitescreen if it's placed in the header, and
I haven't found a filter that actually causes any of those scripts to
be loaded in the front end.

I've tried wp_head and template_redirect. Either nothing happens, or I
just get a white screen.

For reference, the tooltips were checked in by matt (on behalf of
azaozz, who also later removed them) here:
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/7311/trunk/wp-admin/js/common.js

IMO, judging from the fact that they got commented out in a seemingly
unrelated ticket, I'm guessing that their removal was a total mistake.
But you'd have to ask Andrew and/or Matt about that.

Because they only worked with JavaScript enabled, likely. Plus, putting
the labels in the title="" attribute is far more semantic.

(So if you want tooltips like WP 2.5, the proper "ground-up" solution is
to fix your user-agent to display tooltips with no delay, not make a
JavaScript hack.)
