Widely used low level API?

Hello All,

as I'm redesigning and extending parts of an application, I have to
change the API accessing the CAN hardware (init, filter, read,
write...).

I wonder whether there is a widely used/accepted API I should
consider to be compatible to.

Any suggestions?
