We do have a requests page but it would be totally flooded by such lists and
we prefer them as a place for individual requests. We have a few similar lists
sprinkled about the place but not in a standard way:

but since I'm the only one using them so far they be tricky for others to

There is no one simple direct way to download just the English words and
definitions.

Wiktionary uses the same software as Wikipedia which is designed for
encyclopedias which just need one big blob of text for an article. A
dictionary has a structure which has no support in the software and so
instead we represent in a big blob of text.

Now it is possibe to extract useful content from these blobs of text.

The English Wiktionary is divided into sections and subsections with
more-or-less standard formats. It is possible to write a program which
parses this format. But because it is not totally standard some things are
easier to parse than others.

The English list of words in the easiest to extract because you just need to
find every page in the article namespace (not talk pages etc) which contains
==English==

But you might need to ask yourself what you mean be "word" because
Wiktionary also contains many forms of the same word including spelling
variations and compounding variations such as "treeline" vs "tree-line" vs
"tree line". Not ot only this but it includes many many inflected forms such
as "word" vs "words"; "look" vs "looks" vs "looked" vs "looking"; and "fast"
vs "faster" vs "fastest". It is not always easy to filter these out. Worse,
Wiktionary also includes "common misspellings" such as "alot" which are also
tricky to filter out.

Words can have many definitions. There are both "homonyms" and "senses".
Homonyms are words of different origins which share a spelling such as
"sewer" (that which sews) vs "sewer" (wast drainage pipes) and senses are
different meanings of the same word with the same origin such as "chicken"
(domestic fowl) vs (coward).

So you have to decide what "a brief definition" of each means for you. Do
you want just the first definition for each entry, ignoring all the others,
do you want all definitions lumped together, or do you want all definitions
grouped by homonym?

All that being said I think it is a very fair expectation that the English
Wiktionary should make avilable such lists on a regular basis, much like the
Wikimedia foundation makes the raw dump files avaiable. Please feel free to

the English Wiktionary.

issues with Board members, so the three new Wikimedia Trustees (Arne,

the previous vote are resolved. Otherwise it's useless do to the same
all over again.

Issues like :
- make sure that the Wiktionary users are involved in the whole process.
- make sure that all Wiktionary projects will indeed change their logo
when the vote in over.
- check the requirements for a proper logo such as :
* one logo for all the projects. The logo should be exactly the
same for all projects, without any adaptation for any language (which
means no language-dependent feature).
* do not use the same colors as the Wikimedia foundation.
* the logo is independant from the text below ("Wiktionary, the

Is Apple censoring Wiktionary?

I found this news article on Macworld that Phil Schiller contacted the
developer of the Ninjawords dictionary app for the iPhone/iPod Touch.
He said that the application was blocked because the app pulled the
information from Wiktionary, which he says it contains offensive
"urban slang" terns that traditional dictionaries (like paper) don't
have. He said that putting a 17+ rating would be all that he needed to
do. So I starting to wonder if Apple is starting to censor apps that
can access "offensive" words, not just Wiktionary, but all of the
Wikimedia Foundation projects.

Thanks for the clarification!

I've referred to GPL because the dictionaries in question are mostly
GPL, and GFDL has essentially the same philosophy, hasn't it? Anyway,
this new CC license seems to be more re-use friendly for me, at least
the linked page gives a very clear idea how it should be treated.

legal question about using the GPL-ed wiktionary as database

Hi,

I would like to ask legal advice and some parts of the GPL is not clear for me.

Let's suppose I'd like to create an Internet-facing dictionary
application (yes, a yet another one). I'd like to import the initial
data from a few sources, and convert it to my internal data structure.
Some of them are public domain, so nothing interesting there, but e.g.
Wiktionary is GPL-ed, which does impose a few questions for me. By the
way: my internal data structure won't be wikitext.
I'd like to enable my users to edit the content of my dictionary, I'd
like to reuse that content as I see fit (including commercial services
if I am ready to implement anything).

In this case, am I allowed to import Wiktionary as a data source? If
yes, what other constraints do I have (e.g. on editing, publishing,
using as part of the commercial service)? I have a few options here:

1. Importing and merging with the other sources.

2. Importing, not merging, but separately branching with the other
sources, treating the services and the user interface slightly
differently for the different databases (e.g. stating where it is GPL
and where it is our internal data with different use conditions).

3. Importing, not merging, not modifying. Using Wiktionary as a
read-only database, e.g. when the user searches my dictionary I can
provide results from my database and on the same page at the bottom
from the Wiktionary.

In what scenario do I need to re-publish my internal data structures
(either in wikitext or anything else)? I suppose #3 is a safe option
for me, but what other considerations do I have?

At the other side, the old logo is the only WMF logo which may express
diversity inside of one language at the little bit more intelligent
way than "Slobodna енциклопедија" (cf. [1]).

This means that sh.wikt (and, possibly, sr.wikt) will wait with
adoption of the new logo until en.wikt and de.wikt adopt them.

Just as background -- I created the current logo over the course of
about 5 minutes as a placeholder, figuring it would be replaced with a

The Wiktionary projects should maintain a unique visual identity. It
is of the utmost importance that the identity be unique to Wiktionary,
but common among the projects.

there is no central Wiktionary community, the Meta project, and
Foundation-l as well as Wiktionary-l (which was cross-posted) is the
place to get the discussion going.

While the English Wiktionary community may or may not be satisfied
with the logo as-is, in the interest of maintaining a visual identity,
one logo has to be used across projects, whether or not the English
Wiktionary wants it or not. The discussion has to get started, no
matter where it is, and meta and the two mailing lists are, in fact,
the appropriate place to start the discussion. I do expect (and have
asked) that links to that discussion are made from those projects (and

If a precedent was set then, then it was reversed by the successful
Wikibooks logo change: <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikibooks/Logo>

As should be the case, when that happened it was enforced and all the
projects were updated -- if they had no translation, they were given a
plane version without any words (this could later be translated and
requested on bugzilla). The Wikibooks way is probably the best way to
go about it.

It's not "the Meta community". If a vote is held on Meta-Wiki in the
mainspace (not Meta: space), then it has to do with multiple projects
and we use Meta-Wiki because it is the "Wikimedia project coordination
wiki". This means that the vote is intended for all communities and
they are the ones who vote and discuss.

IMO, the process doesn't need to be staff-*driven*, but they need to
be involved and know about the progress of the change. This being

likely to vote in favor of it.

With the refusal of the logo by many wiktionaries, a precedent was set. The
basis for this precedent is very much based on the autonomy of the
individual projects. For the Wiktionaries there have been several moments
where proposals failed because the perceived need for collaboration by some
projects was not shared by all projects.

When I read what is proposed, the impression is given that a process will
start with a compulsory outcome. I understand the rationale for one shared
logo and favicon. The problem is that it is people outside of Wiktionary
that want to improve the Wiktionary "brand" and the last time it was very
much these outsiders that made the selection.

The result is known.

I am in favour of having this matter resolved. Putting time constraints on
this issue is not a good thing. The first thing I would do is inform that
this is a matter that needs to be resolved. Have the Wiktionarians discuss
this for some time and have them define and commit to a timeline. We have
all the time in the world. If it takes an extra month, two, three it takes
another month two three. What you want is a resolution and you have to get
it from the Wiktionarians.

Hi,

I didn't like the new logo (and the way it was chosen), but we installed it
anyway on fr.wiktionary because we wanted to have a unified logo. If all the
Wiktionaries don't use it, it is useless.

I'd like to vote for a new logo, but the process should be better prepared
than last time.

Note on the scrabble thing: personally it's not the copyright with Hasbro
that bothered me. I just think that the logo should identify the project
("hey, it's the Wiktionary!") without reference to something else ("hey,
it's that dictionary that uses scrabble tiles!").

You do get me wrong, I am not justifying the old logo, it is not a logo,
but the new logo is not accepted by many communities and there is a dispute
going on for long time now [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], and I do not recommend
to force all these communities with something ugly like that after all these
failed attempts to get them to accept it.
If there would be someone able to design a new one from the scratch,
something that looks more serious and not like a kindergarden sign, maybe
that might get more projectwide acception.

I didn't take part in the discussion and the vote, but this is a poor
attempt to justify the old logo. People do not look at a web site like
Wiktionary because of the logo.

Tech updates: code updates going live to Wikimedia sites

After a few weeks of bug fixes, we've caught up with MediaWiki
development code review and I'm pushing out an update to the live sites.
This fixes a lot of little bugs, and hopefully doesn't cause introduce
too many new ones. :)

As usual in addition to lots of offline and individual testing among our
staff and volunteer developers, we've done a shakedown on
http://test.wikipedia.org/ -- and as usual we can fully expect a few
more issues to have cropped up that weren't already found.

Don't be alarmed if you do find a problem; just let us know at
http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ or on the tech IRC channels
(#wikimedia-tech on Freenode).

We should be resuming our weekly update schedule soon -- I won't be
doing a mega-crosspost like this every week! -- and will continue to
improve our pre-update staging and shakedown testing to keep disruption
to a minimum and awesome improvements to a maximum.

I'd also like to announce that we've started a blog for Wikimedia tech
activity & MediaWiki development, in part because I want to make sure
community members can easily follow what we're working on and give
feedback before we push things out:

I'd very much like to make sure that we've got regular contacts among
the various project communities who can help coordinate with us on
features, bugs, and general thoughts which might affect some projects
distinctly from others.
