Does anyone have recent experience with replacement winches?  (I've checked
the archives and found just a few posts).

Our 1984 has size 6 Lewmars.  They seem to be overpowered by the genoa,
which I measure to be 165%.  I recently sailed on a 26' boat with big,
self-tailing Lewmars.  They made jib trimming quite easy.  I'd appreciate
any opinions.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
The winches are fine. You need to refine your method of using them. When
either single handed or with crew, bring the sheet across to the high side
after  wrapping it around the lee winch and then wrap around windward winch
and cleat.  It's easy to take up the slack by simply pulling or pushing in the
middle and  then taking up the slack. Bigger winches would be overkill on
the R22.

Steve,

How long has it been since you cleaned your winches?  After 15 years, I
cleaned mine and it makes all the difference.

Rummy is what you describe known as " cross winching?  I've heard of this
for single handing and could never figure out what it meant.  Thanks...

Ron, Yep, that's cross winching or cross sheeting or whatever else you want
to call it. It really works great in wind where you can't use the winch
handle.  It also helps to keep the skipper at the helm and not overboard. When
cross  sheeted, you can use the winch handle on the windward or upper side
if  needed.

Proper winch maintenance makes the winch perform almost like new.  It is
amazing how much a bit of grease and a thorough cleaning make the ratchet
pawls work again.  Check out the attached pdf of the winch manual (see
below.)

Rick,

WHEN?
1. TWO OR THREE TIMES DURING ACTIVE
SAILING SEASON: Lewmar winches should be
stripped, cleaned and re-lubricated.
2. AT THE END OF EACH SAILING SEASON AND
BEFORE STARTING THE NEW SAILING
SEASON: All Lewmar winches should be
completely stripped, cleaned, thoroughly checked
for damage and lubricated with reference to the
information provided in the Lewmar Volume 10
Service Manual.

Wow!  Had Mike not sent this out, I probably would have waited 15 years
too.

Thanks!

Lee,

I'm not an extremist like the manual advocates.  Every 5 years is probably
OK.
