WinchesDoes anyone have recent experience with replacement winches? (I've checked
the archives and found just a few posts). Our 1984 has size 6 Lewmars. They seem to be overpowered by the genoa, which I measure to be 165%. I recently sailed on a 26' boat with big, self-tailing Lewmars. They made jib trimming quite easy. I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks, Steve Granville, OH __________________________________________________ To subscribe/unsubscribe go to http://www.rhodes22.org/mailman/listinfo/rhodes22-list For the list Charter and help with using the mailing list and archives go to http://www.rhodes22.org/list __________________________________________________ |

Re: WinchesSteve,
How long has it been since you cleaned your winches? After 15 years, I cleaned mine and it makes all the difference. Re: WinchesProper winch maintenance makes the winch perform almost like new. It is
amazing how much a bit of grease and a thorough cleaning make the ratchet pawls work again. Check out the attached pdf of the winch manual (see below.) Subject: Re: [Rhodes22-list] Winches Steve, The winches are fine. You need to refine your method of using them. When either single handed or with crew, bring the sheet across to the high side after wrapping it around the lee winch and then wrap around windward winch and cleat. It's easy to take up the slack by simply pulling or pushing in the middle and then taking up the slack. Bigger winches would be overkill on the R22. Rummy In a message dated 10/30/2009 1:27:33 P.M. Re: WinchesRick,
WHEN? 1. TWO OR THREE TIMES DURING ACTIVE SAILING SEASON: Lewmar winches should be stripped, cleaned and re-lubricated. 2. AT THE END OF EACH SAILING SEASON AND BEFORE STARTING THE NEW SAILING SEASON: All Lewmar winches should be completely stripped, cleaned, thoroughly checked for damage and lubricated with reference to the information provided in the Lewmar Volume 10 Service Manual. Wow! Had Mike not sent this out, I probably would have waited 15 years too. Thanks! Lee 1986 Rhodes22 At Ease Kent Island, MD -----Original Message----- From: rhodes22-list-bounces@... Re: WinchesLee,
I'm not an extremist like the manual advocates. Every 5 years is probably OK. Rick On Mon, Nov 2, 2009 at 7:17 AM, KUHN, LELAND <LKUHN@...> wrote: > Rick, > > WHEN? > 1.
