Wind Screen Cat's EyesHello all,
I'm going to get a new windscreen for my 96 BBB and am considering having Cat's Eye vents cut into it. I'd like some feedback from anyone else who has either done the same or considered it. Has anyone else done the same and if so would you do it again. What advantages or dis-advantages have you found. I'm thinking about having a screen 580 - 600mm in length as the wind noise coming from the OEM screen is giving me the proverbials. Regards Mark F South Austraalia |

RE: Wind Screen Cat's EyesMark,
I have a Clear View replacement screen on my 96 Trophy 900 with 2 vents cut into it. At first I thought I would feel the air coming through the vents at me but this isnt the case. I dont feel anything from them behind the windshield. I think your cats eye cuts will most likely be fine. Bill From: TriumphTrophy@... Mark, I had put the Clearview screen with "cat's eyes" on mine. The only thing it did was to let water in. It did almost nothing to reduce turbulence and noise, which is the real problem with the Trophy windscreens. To remove the turbulence, one needs to create a substantial flow underneath the airfoil. On almost any modern bike, this is achieved by having a large vent at the base of the windscreen, so air can flow freely up the backside and meet up with the air on the front of the screen. As many have found for the Trophy, the next best fix is to install a secondary panel (like the commercially available "Laminar Lip") near the top of windscreen, to reduce turbulence and smooth out the airflow and reduce the vacuum created behind the windscreen. I believe this effect is called a "Karmen Street" in aeronautics. So overall, my experience is that cat's eyes are not enough to accomplish this, and you are probably better off just designing a secondary screen near the top of the solid windscreen, set about an inch or so away. I probably went through 2-3 old windscreens I bought from other listers, and I even tried cutting very large openings at the base of the screen. Nothing really worked, except for the secondary screen installed at the top of the existing windscreen. Except for the aerodynamics of the windscreen, which has been the bane of the Trophy since its inception (and thus the upper fairing re-design in 99 - which didn't solve it) there is very little else to fault on the bike (and the seat, which is a universal complaint with every bike) as a superb touring and sport-touring machine. RE: Re: Wind Screen Cat's Eyes> -----Original Message----- > From: Jack Byers > I'm not sure just what "cats eyes are? Are they for letting a > breeze into the cockpit? To relieve back pressure on the screen. Mine do not let in water (apart from the odd dribble) so my experience is different to other posters. My screen does not make any wind noise - at all - and I find it hard to accept that others say it does. It is the airflow directed to the helmet which causes noise and turbulence. My Clearview XL takes that airflow to the top of my helmet - so it is a very quiet ride. I have covered many thousands of miles in rain and wind and would not be without my Clearview. The stock Trophy screen created an airflow that was very uncomfortable. Ken the Geordie SST 13 BSA A75R, A10, B40, D10, Triumph Trophy 1200 |

Re: Wind Screen Cat's Eyes> Mine do not let in water (apart from the odd dribble) so my experience is > different to other posters. > > My screen does not make any wind noise - at all - and I find it hard to > accept that others say it does. > Ken, I should clarify my earlier post on my experience with windscreens. It always seemed to me there were two ways to go one the windscreens. One is the barn door approach, which is to make the screen bigger, so the wind goes over the helmet. The other is to keep the screen short, but to figure out some way to reduce the turbulence coming over the top. The large Clearview definitely accomplishes the first. I had one, and it was quiet, but didn't like it, as it produced air pressure on my back, and I always felt it was more sensitive to cross winds. The shorter screens definitely produce a lot of noise and turbulence at helmet level. The only solution I found for that was to use a secondary screen near the top of the existing screen to smooth out the flow and throw the air up higher. So I would think the effectiveness of cat's eyes cut into the screen might depend on the size of the screen, and whether they are reducing any vacuum created. The ideal windscreen is definitely a personal decision, with no single best solution. Rick Hartwick 00 Trophy 900 |

That again is also interesting because I find exactly the opposite. The bigger screen makes the bike less susceptible to cross wind buffeting. I noticed the imporvement amost straight away. Someone did once explain to me why that would happen but I can't remember the explanation now. > The ideal windscreen is definitely a personal decision, with no > single best solution. Based on all the replies I have read here over many years, I would agree. The same applies to the seat; I have no problem with that either. I'm an inch shorter but quite long in the upper body, so probably the same as you. Clearview tend to recommend a size shorter than I think most people find comfortable and remember you can always cut them down quite easily. You can't make them taller ! Re: Wind Screen Cat's EyesJust a thought: I got my Clearview with the adjustable vent and I find that it allows me to vary the amount of air passing through it or to close it if it's cole and open it on a warm day to allow some air to hit me.

It may be that yours is an older Clearview screen. They originally fitted the closeable vents (which I didn't think looked very pretty) but then Clearview stopped offering them as the curvature of the screen was not compatible with the flat profile of the vent. This decision was made a the time that the screen thickness went up from 3mm to 5mm due to some screens flexing too much and even snapping. My 5mm screen was only available with the cats eye vents. It may be that the later screen profiles (2001 onwards) may allow for the closeable vent due to flatter profile. I don't know. Ken the Geordie SST 13 BSA A75R, A10, B40, D10, Triumph Trophy 1200 |

RE: Re: Wind Screen Cat's EyesHere are the available Trophy Clearview Screens;
http://clearviewshields.com/shop/product.php?id=64 and they do show the adjustable vents. I have a Medium, Grey Tint, with the cat's eye vents. I'm 5'10" and it's the perfect height for me. Clearview claims it's 2" higher and 2.5" wider than stock. I couldn't tell you because I bought the bike without a windshield. The original windshield was broken by somebody backing into the bike in a parking lot and removed. I can't comment on wind noise as it is the first bike I ever owned with a windshield and haven't ridden any others that had them either.
