Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor says OO.o won't install.

I just ran Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. I got this remark about OO.o.

OpenOffice.org 3.1
version 3.1.9399
OpenOffice.org

Uninstall first

You need to uninstall this program before upgrading to Windows 7. You
won't be able to install it after upgrading to Windows 7.

Is there any truth to this? Does anyone here have experience with OO.o
under Beta Windows 7?

I have Windows 7 beta running under vmware - completely fresh installation,
not an upgrade - with ooo 3.1 loaded, and it seems to be OK, though I've not
used it as extensively as my regular installation on opensuse.

There is no truth to it at all. I have installed the Windows 7 RC on a
laptop and am very happily using OOo3.1 with no problems!

I ran it a month or so ago, then a week ago.
It did not tell me to uninstall anything.
But it keeps on saying that OOo will not work, or might not work.

I know it works, since my thread was answered by people
who are running Win7 RCs and it works fine.  Maybe even
better than it did on Vista.

Now if I had the spare cash I would pre-order Win7 for the
$50 price for the upgrade special, but my income dropped
a good percent and the cash is tight.

Do not worry what MS is saying.  It just does not know
OOo.  If it does not run after the upgrade, you could
always reinstall it, yes???

Also make sure you do a backup before the upgrade to Win7.
That way you will have all you data files, etc., there
if Win7 messes up big-time during the upgrade.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Web Kracked and Terrence. I will
need to fetch drivers and invest in a video card, but that's easy enough.

I am presently running a version of XP that does not require the OS to
call home. i.e. I can avoid activation, and I truly will hate to give
that up, but XP support at the University will go away in the next
couple of years, so I'll either have to switch to some version of Linux
or go to W-7.

With Warmest Regards

What do you think of 7  as compared to XP
(we all know it is better than vista)

Although I have put Windows 7 on the laptop my wife bought me because it
couldn't be any worse than Vista, on my desk top I'm using Ubuntu Linux.
Of the two, Windows or Linux I think that you would be better off trying
Ubuntu or some other flavour of Linux that might be more suited to your
requirements when support for XP finally expires.

Haven't tried Windows / (yet ?), so perhaps I should stay out of this one,
but considering that fools rush in, etc, here goes : I find (64-bit) Ubuntu
Jaunty far better on the desktop than any Windows OS I've hitherto tried,
and as we know, OOo works very well on it. If one must have a Windows OS, my
suggestion would be to install Windows Server 2008 and configure it to run
as a desktop rather than a server ; I find my 32-bit version superior to
both Vista and XP. And I have had no trouble whatever using OOo on it....

Please note that I haven't said a word about Wikipedia....

Heck, I'm still running desktops with windows 98 on them - if it aint
broke...
I run Ubuntu, but my wife uses tons of Win programs and I don't want to
fuss with getting them all to work under wine so I am looking at windows
for her current Vista machine.  Yeah, I know. . .

That's funny. I have a machine sitting here dual booted with an early
Debian (circa 2001) and Windows 98. I was writing C++ texts and every
time I crashed a test a program, 98 had to be rebooted. So I developed
on Linux, got every feature I liked running for the student program,
perfected by testing on the Win 98 box. Painfully. Slowly. Agonizingly.

It's broke, but probably not for what you are doing.

I understand, for I need Finale,  or a compatible music notation
program,  that will run under Linux or at least with WINE. That'll
require some experimenting.

Thanks! I was hoping this report by the MS Win 7 Upgrade Advisor was MS FUD.
And thanks again to all who responded to my inquiry.

Mr. Teague, please stop your mail system sending receipts to this list.
We get enough noise as it is.

Mr. Teague, please reconfigure your mail system so that it does not send
receipts to this list. We get enough noise as it is.

Mr Fuchs,

I do not now and I have never caused email to request read-receipts for
messages. Such things are a waste of everyone's time and resources.  I
get the noise just as you do, and in fact you have generated a bit of it
yourself.

You generated a bit of this noise. You made several unnecessary requests
to the list about this. I suggest you read your messages more carefully,
give your answer more thought and make such complaints in off-list email
to the real offender.

A request person, privately, (you have my email address) would have been
sufficient, and would have produced less noise for everyone.

I did however respond to such a request, and it appears that is what you
are complaining about.
I did not originate the request. I repeat, you should read your email a
bit more carefully.

David Teague
