Reread the thread. You did not request a read-receipt, you sent a return
receipt. Here is the message you sent:

    From: davidbteague@...
    Newsgroups: gmane.comp.openoffice.questions
Subject: Return Receipt (displayed) - [users] Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
     says OO.o won't install.
    Date: Sun, 05 Jul 2009 23:58:47 -0400

This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to
    davidbteague@....

Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was
displayed on the recipient's computer. There is no guarantee that
the recipient has read or understood the message contents.

He made two postings requesting that you do not send receipts.I'd
suggest you read them more carefully. He asked you to not send receipts
to this list, which you had done. You are the real offender. Your sent
the receipt he is writing about.

> I did however respond to such a request, and it appears that is what
> you are complaining about.
> I did not originate the request. I repeat, you should read your email

He did not say you sent the request. You did send the reply, which he
complained about. It is your fault and responsibility for sending a
reply to the request to this list. Take responsibility for your own
actions and learn to read more carefully before telling others to do so.

For my addition of noise to the list, I apologize, for my responses were
written in anger. This seldom produces a good result.

In the future, in the interest of low noise on this list, everyone,
please, send such requests regarding posting etiquette to the
INDIVIDUAL, not to the entire list.

Let us have no more noise posted to the list on this subject.

From this account (willcarman@...) send a message to
users-unsubscribe@.... (The subject and content are ignored,
only the address matters.) You should soon get an unsubscribe
confirmation message. Once you respond to that, your subscription will
be canceled. If you do not soon receive such a message, it may be that
it is being treated as spam -- check your "junk" folders to see if it's
there, and check your personal filters to make sure they're not
dicarding it. Another possibility is that your request is not being seen
as coming from this account. In that case, there is an alternate form
that might be useful:
users-unsubscribe-willcarman=embarqmail.com@... (note the
equals sign in the embedded address).

That will also result in a confirmation message to
willcarman@....

Please note that *the users on this list have no authority to
unsubscribe you*, you need to do this yourself. You must receive the
unsubscribe confirmation request and follow its instructions. If the
above process does not work for you, there is no way we can help. You
may be able to contact users-owner@... and explain the problem.

I think we need someone to run an autoreply to privately reply to
someone whenever "unsubscribe" is mentioned in a listpost.  t'would
reduce the frustration on this list significantly, from what I can see ^^

You subscribed to this user list with this account
(mlconsidine@...), so you are receiving the list traffic. As this
is an active list, it is not surprising that you have received that many
messages. No legal action is required to stop receiving them. Since you
apparently did not really want to subscribe, just unsubscribe.

Complete directions for doing so are included in the message you quoted;
just substitute your own account name as needed.

Then you will be suing yourself. To receive mail from this list you must
subscribe yourself and then reply to the auto response message you
received. To unsubscribe, follow the instructions below.

Good luck with suing yourself.

Hello Michael,

Sorry to bother you with these details, but your email comes at a
particularly interesting moment in time, coinciding with a discussion
begun by myself regarding this subject. (well kind of on subject at least)

This is a mailing list - for you to receive 159 messages you needed to
have requested your email address be added to the list.

After that - a confirmation email was sent to that address.

After that - you would of needed to respond to that confirmation email,
in the affirmative.
(These last two steps are done as a precaution, so that no other person
could register your address without your knowledge )

The first email you sent a few minutes ago was processed directly the
the list - which means that this registration process had been
successfully completed.

Looking at all emails to the list from April 2008 up to and including
yesterday I fail to find any other emails from your address, so I take
it that this was your first email to the list. This shows that your
email address was never used to as an un-subscribed email address.
(During this time frame appx. 20,000 emails where processed through the
list from both subscribed and un-subscribed addresses.)

Two possibilities exist therefore:

1) A subscription using your email address was performed without your
knowledge. In this case this really needs to be reported to the
appropriate individuals as there is a serious problem with the software
or the process.

2) The instructions and information presented on our web sites is very
poor and lead you to creating a subscription without adequately
explaining what would be coming - a lot of emails. Another problem but
of another type and needing a different solution.

If either of the two possibilities above are in fact the case please let
us know via the list so that appropriate actions can be started.

Also, let me point out that OpenOffice.org directly and indirectly
through it's supporters, provides a number of informational services
such as this list, web based forums, on-line knowledge bases, web sites
and a wiki. None of those services, not a one, require that you be
registered, or subscribed, in any way to browse or search the
repositories offered by them.

Finally, I believe others have already pointed you towards how to remove
your email address from the list.

Best wishes,

Drew

You should soon get an unsubscribe confirmation message. Once you respond to that, your subscription will be canceled. If you do not soon receive such a message, it may be that it is being treated as spam -- check your "junk" folders to see if it's there, and check your personal filters to make sure they're not dicarding it. Another possibility is that your request is not being seen as coming from this account. In that case, there is an alternate form that might be useful: users-unsubscribe-willcarman=embarqmail.com@... (note the equals sign in the embedded address).

Did you reply to the confirmation message the list software sent you?  If you
did not, you are  still subscribed, as evidenced by the [users] tag in the
subject line.
